CUHK Vice-Chancellor Leads Delegation to Shanghai to Strengthen Academic Partnership
Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), led a delegation to Shanghai on 3 – 6 September to attend a series of academic activities including the World Philanthropy Forum and the Annual meeting of Partnership Steering Committee. The delegation visited Fudan University (FDU) and Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) to strengthen academic partnership and collaboration. In the delegation comprises Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice-President; Prof. Steven Ngai, Department Chairperson of Social Work; Prof. Tang Sze Wing, Department Chairperson of Chinese Language and Literature; Prof. Joyce Ma, Professor of Social Work; Prof. Timothy Kwok, Professor of Medicine and Therapeutic; Prof. Shelly Tse, Associate Professor of The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care; Prof. Kelvin Tsoi, Research Associate Professor of the Stanley Ho Big Data Decision Analytics Research Centre; Ms. Janet Chow, Director of Institutional Advancement and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China).
During the visit in Shanghai, President Tuan met with Mr. Yin Hong, Vice Party Secretary of Shanghai; Professor Xu Ningsheng, President of FDU, who co-chaired the annual meeting of CUHK-FDU Partnership Steering Committee; and Professor Lin Zhongqin, President of SJTU. The meetings provided the opportunity to update on the latest developments and discussed possible directions on respective strengths. CUHK has made a lot of efforts into consolidating ties with partner institutions in Shanghai in a broad range of collaborative disciplines including research collaboration, student interflow and exchange activities.

Vice-Chancellor of CUHK Visits Xi'an to Foster Research Collaboration
A delegation led by Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), visited Xi'an on 15 – 16 September to strengthen ties and foster scientific collaboration. Members of the delegation included Prof. Chiu Chi Yue, Faculty Dean of Social Science, Prof. Eric Fong, Department Chairperson of Sociology and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China).
President Tuan visited Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) and had meeting with Professor Wang Shuguo, President of XJTU to discuss in details the collaboration plan. The two presidents jointly officiated at the plaque-unveiling ceremony for the CUHK-XJTU Joint Research Centre on Migration, witnessing the close partnership in humanities and social science between the two universities. The joint research centre will focus its effort on relevant research covering an extensive range of topics to include international immigration and emigration and internal migration in China, as well as relevant social policies and economic impact. The integration of international and internal migrants in China, the social and economic impact of emigration and return migration on households and communities in China, and talent migration in the Greater Bay Area in China will also be included. It will serve as an exchange platform for researchers all over the world to conduct cross-disciplinary research, and develop as a leading base globally on migration. CUHK Provost Attends USTC's 60th Anniversary Activities
Professor Benjamin Wah, Provost of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), attended the 60th anniversary events of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei on 18 – 20 September. During the visit, Professor Wah met with Dr. Li Guoying, Governor of Anhui Province; Professor Shu Gequn, Party Secretary of USTC and Professor Bao Xinhe, President of USTC, sending best wishes to USTC on behalf of CUHK.
In joining a series of activities, Professor Wah gave a thought-provoking presentation titled "Developing World Class Research with Societal Impact" at the University Presidents' Forum, explaining the difficulties and the importance of assessing the quality of research projects in different fields in an accurate and objective manner. With the theme of "Education to Face the Future", the Forum attracted some 40 leaders, scholars and specialists from universities in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, the Netherlands and Australia to gather and discuss ways of enhancing collaboration and exploring new modes of education. Issues of sustainable development, fusion research, collaboration between the industry, the academia and the research sector, as well as internalization were also discussed to share visions and experience in establishing world-class universities and nurturing innovative talents under new circumstances.
CUHK signed a university-level collaboration agreement with USTC in 1992 and developed collaboration spectrum since then mostly in Faculties of Engineering and Science. Apart from joint research projects and academic symposia, USTC students have been actively participating in OALC's Summer Research Placement Programme in recent years. Professor Wah's visit contributed to the strengthening of mutual connections and friendship, paving the way for further partnership development.
