CUHK Provost Attends USTC's 60th Anniversary Activities

Professor Benjamin Wah, Provost of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), attended the 60th anniversary events of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei on 18 – 20 September.  During the visit, Professor Wah met with Dr. Li Guoying, Governor of Anhui Province; Professor Shu Gequn, Party Secretary of USTC and Professor Bao Xinhe, President of USTC, sending best wishes to USTC on behalf of CUHK.

In joining a series of activities, Professor Wah gave a thought-provoking presentation titled "Developing World Class Research with Societal Impact" at the University Presidents' Forum, explaining the difficulties and the importance of assessing the quality of research projects in different fields in an accurate and objective manner.  With the theme of "Education to Face the Future", the Forum attracted some 40 leaders, scholars and specialists from universities in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, the Netherlands and Australia to gather and discuss ways of enhancing collaboration and exploring new modes of education.  Issues of sustainable development, fusion research, collaboration between the industry, the academia and the research sector, as well as internalization were also discussed to share visions and experience in establishing world-class universities and nurturing innovative talents under new circumstances.

CUHK signed a university-level collaboration agreement with USTC in 1992 and developed collaboration spectrum since then mostly in Faculties of Engineering and Science.  Apart from joint research projects and academic symposia, USTC students have been actively participating in OALC's Summer Research Placement Programme in recent years.  Professor Wah's visit contributed to the strengthening of mutual connections and friendship, paving the way for further partnership development.
