Vice-Chancellor of CUHK Participates in Meeting of the Association of University Presidents of China and Forum on Building World-class Universities in Xi'an
Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) visited Xi'an from 18 to 19 October. He participated in the 2019 Meeting of the Association of University Presidents of China (AUPC) and delivered talk for the Forum on Building World-class Universities. During the visit, Professor Tuan discussed future development paths of universities with presidents and leaders of participating mainland and local universities including Fudan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Nanjing University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, The University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Xi'an Jiaotong University and Zhejiang University (in alphabetical order).
Heads of the 12 participating universities gave talks and held discussions on the three themes of the Forum, namely " How Do the First-class Universities Lead the Social Development?", " The Mechanism and System of Moral Education in New Era" and " The Evaluation, Construction and Development of "Double First-class" ", sharing insights about recent education developments. Professor Tuan delivered talk for the first theme with focus on equal access of elite higher education, benefits of community collaboration and sustainability development. The annual meeting of AUPC was convened during the after the Forum and Professor Tuan chaired the meeting as the President of AUPC of the year. Participating senior members exchanged opinions on future plans of AUPC and how to enhance academic linkage among members.
AUPC was founded in 1997, comprising member institutions including CUHK, nine universities which were first ranked on Project 985 of mainland China (i.e. C9 universities), The University of Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The Association aims to dedicate its expertise and coordinate resources to the development of higher education in China. Apart from annual meetings and Presidents Forums among member universities, the Association also administers the AUPC Visiting Scholar / Executive Scheme to promote exchange and further academic linkage among members.

CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor Attends the 100th Anniversary Ceremony of Nankai University cum World University Presidents Forum
Professor Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), attended the 100th Anniversary Ceremony of Nankai University and World University Presidents Forum in Tianjin on 16 – 17 October 2019.
The Presidents Forum themed "The Mission and Capability Building of World-class Universities" was held on 16 October. Over 120 representatives and leaders from 44 universities as well as many world-renowned research institutions around the world, gathered at the Forum to discuss the mission and capacity building in world-class universities. Prof. Fok spoke at the panel discussion entitled "What is the standard for a world-class university?", sharing the mission and vision of CUHK with participating guests, "While we distinguish ourselves by enhancing reputation, presence, relevance, impact and teaching and research, we must ensure the quality and affluence of the student world in pursuing knowledge as well as embracing cultural diversity, precious tradition and full inclusiveness. The more important criterion is how to nurture global leaders with unique legacy." Prof. Fok attended the 100th Anniversary Ceremony of Nankai University held after the Forum together with over 4,000 guests all over the world to celebrate Nankai's 100th birthday.
Nankai University and CUHK signed collaboration agreement in 2008 and established "The CUHK-Nankai Joint Research Centre of Social Policy " in the same year. The Centre aims to enhance research collaboration of both universities, with a view to promoting the development of social work and social welfare in Hong Kong and Mainland China. The two universities also started cooperation in environmental assessment and projects in gender research and social policy research.

CUHK Attends the Opening Ceremony of Science and Innovation Center at Futian
Associate Vice-President Dr. Daniel HS Lee led a delegation to attend the Opening Ceremony of Science and Innovation Center at Futian on 10 October. CUHK delegates included Prof. Martin D.F. Wong, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering; Prof. Liu Yun-hui, Professor of Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering; Dr. Lee Chi-ming, Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services;; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of Academic Links (China). Participating guests included Mr. Liu Qingsheng, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, Vice Mayor and Deputy secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government; and Mr. Zeng Pai, Secretary General and Member of the Party Leadership Group of Shenzhen Municipal People's Government. They were joined by renowned scholars including academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The grand opening ceremony was held at the Information Technology Industrial Park in Shenzhen with the theme of Innovative Futian – Engine of The Greater Bay Area. Agreements on collaboration were signed between Futian Government and representatives of enterprises and higher education institutes including CUHK during the ceremony, consolidating ties between the industries, academia and research sectors.
CUHK always adopts a liberal policy on research undertakings that allow breadth and depth. Standard of the University's scientific research has been well received internationally. The participation in collaboration between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, will serve as a good platform for CUHK to promote its latest development of innovation and technology , enhancing the linkage for research development in the Greater Bay Area.

CUHK Joins the Annual Meeting of the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Education Alliance of China 2019
The General Meeting of the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Education Alliance of China (IEEAC) 2019 was held on 19 – 21 October in Harbin. Associate Vice-President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong(CUHK), Dr. Daniel HS Lee led a delegation to participate in the activities and attend the annual board meeting of the Alliance. CUHK delegates included Dr. Lee Chi-ming, Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services; Mr. Perkins HO, Head of Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation Team of Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS); and Dr. Susan Luo, Manager of Office of Innovation and Enterprise.
The board meeting was chaired by Prof. Qiu Yong, President of Tsinghua University as the chairman of the alliance board. Over 50 leaders of about 30 member institutes took part in the meeting where an annual report of 2018-19 was presented and 2020 year plan was discussed.
The theme of the year 2019 is "Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Creativity, Unleashing New Momentum of Education". Over 1,500 participants attended the event, including representatives of the alliance members, scholars, university management executives, government officials, members from enterprises and business partners, and entrepreneurial projects. A series of activities were held, including an Innovation & Entrepreneurship Education Reform Forum, the 2nd IEEAC Entrepreneurship & Innovation Challenge Competition, and the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Achievement Exhibition.
IEEAC was initiated by Tsinghua University to serve as an important platform in implementation of the innovation-driven education among the universities and social enterprises. CUHK accepted the invitation to join the Alliance in early 2016, is now serving as the Deputy Secretary-General of Hong Kong region.
