Cross-Strait Forum on Humanities and Social Sciences, a joint academic initiative among the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Peking University (PKU), Fudan University, Nanjing University (NJU), Taiwan University (NTU) and Taiwan Central University (NCU) was held in Beijing from 17 to 18 October. Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, led a delegation of CUHK to participate in the event and joined the 3rd Board Meeting of the Forum. She was accompanied by Prof. Chiu Chi-yue, Dean of Social Science and Prof. Leung Yuen-sang, Dean of Arts of CUHK.
The theme of the Forum this year was 'Chinese Culture and the Modern World: The 100th Anniversary of the New Cultural Movement', covering a wide range of panel topics on modern spirit of Chinese culture, the New Cultural Movement and modern China, personal development and social progress, as well as the relation between China's rise and global justice. Over 50 participants from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan attended the Forum and joined the panel discussions. Prof. Dai Haijing of Department of Social Work, Prof. Letty Kwan of Department of Psychology and Prof. Cheung Lik-kwan of Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, gave presentations at the Forum.
The Cross-Strait Forum on Humanities and Social Science was initially developed and convened by CUHK, NJU and NCU in 2007 to link scholars and students in related fields to foster academic exchange in humanities and social sciences. In order to fully utilize this platform and create greater impact for deeper connection across the regions, CUHK took the initiative to expand the Forum by inviting more member universities and research organizations. Since 2014, board members have been increased to seven under the new collaboration agreement. The third Board Meeting was held after the closing ceremony on 18 October. Members shared views on further direction and developments of the Forum and devised plans to enhance communication at the meeting.
