CUHK Attends the Celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of CAS 

 

Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), led a 10-member delegation to join celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Shenzhen.  Members of the delegation include Prof. Benjamin Wah, Provost of CUHK; Prof. Kenneth Young, Master of C.W. Chu College and Professor of Physics; Prof. Wong Ching-ping, Faculty Dean of Engineering; and Prof. Sean Tang, Department Chairman of Information Engineering and Associate Director of SIAT.

 

Mr. Ma Xingrui, Party Secretary of Shenzhen Municipal Government; Mr. Xu Qin, Mayor of Shenzhen; Ms. Wu Yihuan, Deputy Mayor; Prof. Liu Weiping, Deputy Director of CAS; Prof. Joseph Sung; Prof. Ding Zhongli, President of the University of CAS; and Prof. Fan Jianping, Director of SIAT officiate at the anniversary ceremony.  Prof. Fan gave a presentation on the progressive development and achievements of SIAT in the past ten years.  Prof. Sung congratulated SIAT on its 10th Anniversary in his speech at the meeting, stating that CUHK, as one of the founding members of the Instiute, are proud of the accomplishments of SIAT.  He hoped that the concerted efforts of CUHK, CAS and Shenzhen can be extended to enhance the scope of collaboration, with specific growth in the Pearl River Delta Region, contributing to the socio-economic development of the nation and the region.

 

In the Technological Innovation Forum held during the celebration, CUHK members delivered talks together with mainland, American and German scholars and had academic exchange.  Discussions were held on the frontier technology and innovation development in brain science, life science and health engineering, big data, technologies of cognitive and artificial intelligence. 

 

SIAT was jointly established by CUHK, CAS and Shenzhen Municipal Government in February 2006, which is the first national research unit with the involvement of overseas institution and the only national institute in Shenzhen.  CAS is one of the close and important partners of CUHK.  Both parties have carried out a wide range of collaborative projects in academic exchange and research collaboration including State Key Laboratories and other joint laboratories.  CUHK has also developed close relationships with various Shenzhen institutions and enterprises.  The University set up its Shenzhen Research Institute and established CUHK(Shennzhen) in 2010 and 2014 respectively to boost strength of teaching, learning and research in the region.

Vice-Chancellor of CUHK Joins Sino-German University Presidents Forum on Tertiary Education and Technological Innovation

 

Invited by the State Ministry of Education, Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), attended the Sino-German University Presidents Forum on Tertiary Education and Technological Innovation, which was held in Berlin, Germany on 25 November.  The Forum was co-organized by the Free University of Berlin and China Scholarship Council, inviting around 60 leaders of Chinese and German tertiary institutions  to explore new means of collaboration and discuss technological innovations and applications in the Forum.  Vice Premier Liu Yandong officiated and spoke at the Forum.  Prof. Sung of CUHK is the only representative from Hong Kong.

 

Participating institutions exchanged ideas on the German elite programme and the Chinese first-class universities and disciplines initiative, as well as the challenges and opportunities of collaboration between Chinese and German universities.  Prof. Sung hoped that Hong Kong can continue to serve as a platform for exchange of talents and development of technologies between both nations.  During the Forum, Prof. Sung shared views with various Chinese and German universities in the activities and enhanced links with these institutions.

Associate Vice-President of CUHK Participates in Sino-Foreign University Presidents Forum and Ningbo-Hong Kong Education Co-operation Forum

 

Prof. Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice-President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), joined the activities celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Ningbo University and the Sino-Foreign University Presidents Forum held in Ningbo from 1 to 3 November to exchange experience with Hong Kong, mainland and overseas institutions.  During her visit, Prof. Wong also attended Ningbo-Hong Kong Education Co-operation Forum.

 

As one of the major anniversary activities of Ningbo University, Sino-Foreign University Presidents Forum had a theme on "Building Academic Universities: Challenges and Opportunities".  Over 100 representatives from a total of 24 universities in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, Madagascar, Spain and Sweden participated in the event. Delegates discussed topics concerning the development of research universities, interaction and integration of disciplines, effective administration and regional socio-economic developments.  Prof. Wong gave a presentation on the establishment and development of advanced research universities during the Forum.

 

Following the Sino-Foreign University Presidents Forum was the Ningbo-Hong Kong Education Co-operation Forum, which invited over 150 guests from the education sectors of Ningbo and Hong Kong.  The theme this year was "Opening and Sharing for Win-Win Collaboration".  A number of education collaboration agreements were concluded at the Forum, with the aim of furthering collaboration between Ningbo and Hong Kong for forward development.

 

CUHK has developed links with Ningbo University since 2011, when a memorandum of understanding on establishing the Li Dak Sum Academic Exchange Fund for Collaboration was signed to support academic and student interflow, as well as research and training between the two universities.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK  Attends the 110th Anniversary of Jinan University

 

Prof. Isabella Poon, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), paid a visit to Jinan University (JNU) on 19 November 2016 and took part in its 110th anniversary celebration.  Prof. Poon joined the Commemoration Ceremony with a theme on "further promotion of the development of high-level universities" and exchanged ideas with university leaders all over the world.

 

Apart from the celebratory activities, Prof. Poon met with Prof. Hong An, Vice-President of JNU to discuss collaboration plans between the two universities.  CUHK has estalished links with JNU in terms of research projects on medical sciences as well as student interflow activities.  With the support of the State Ministry of Education, the two universities established the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Regenerative Medicine, focusing their efforts into conducting research on stem cell and regenerative medicine, and nurturing more professional talents.  The inauguration ceremonies were held in Hong Kong and Guangzhou respectively on 29 February this year.
