Over 1400 Enjoy the Beauty of Kun Opera in CUHK-PKU Joint Performance on CUHK Campus
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Peking University (PKU) made their debut Kunqu collaboration, The Peony Pavilion (Students' Edition), on 2 December (Sunday) at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of CUHK. Directed by Professor Pai Hsien-yung, CUHK Distinguished Professor-at-Large, and jointly presented by CUHK alumni and over 30 students from 15 Beijing universities, the performance attracted a full house of audience comprising more than 1,400 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. The joint performance was also to celebrate the 55th Anniversary of CUHK and the 120th Anniversary of Peking University.
Three young CUHK alumni, Vivian Yuen, Eugenea Cheung and Gabriel Chau, performed together with students from Peking University and high schools in Beijing. The performers displayed in the 3-hour show the beautiful, energetic and innovative features of Kun Opera. Other participating universities include Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing International Studies University, Beijing Normal University, Capital Normal University, Central Conservatory of Music, China Foreign Affairs University, China University of Petroleum, China University of Political Science and Law, Minzu University of China, National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, The Central Academy of Drama, Tsinghua University, University of Chinese Academy of Science, University of Science and Technology Beijing (in alphabetical order).
The performance received rousing support from members of CUHK and of the public, with many young guests, contributing to the promotion of traditional Chinese Kun Opera and enhancing the linkages between CUHK and various Beijing universities. Below are extracts of participants' sharing:
I'd like to thank Professor Pai Hsien-yung, Peking University, Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre and CUHK for giving us such a precious opportunity to join such a cross-strait joint Kunqu opera performance. I remember every single scene of our rehearsal and performance during the past year, and believe this last performance would become our most-cherished bit of memory. May we express our sincere gratitude to our teachers, who had always been doing their best to help us and encourage us to perform confidently. Their love has turned the cold winter into a hopeful spring. — Sun Yichen, National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts
We are really lucky to be able to take part in this project, gaining unforgettable experience through this trip to CUHK. It's thrilling to devote some effort into the spread of Kunqu opera despite our identity as amateurs. For this time there were three students from CUHK jointly performing with us, who became new friends of ours and shared with us experience of Kunqu opera, as if we were friends for years. It was this great art that has brought people from distance together. — Wang Jingzhi, Peking University
I have to thank Professor Pai Hsien-yung and Professor Hua Wei for this great opportunity for the three of us as CUHK alumni to be on stage with Beijing students at our alma mater. I was moved by and grateful for the full house on the day of performance. I sincerely hope that this performance will let more friends of Hong Kong know and like Kunqu opera, sowing good seeds in their minds. — Eugenea Cheung, Alumnus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong
