【Cultural Topics】Dr. C.K. Wong Chaired the New Asia Lectures on Contemporary China 2020/21
|
Dr. C. K. Wong, the founder of iASPEC Technologies Group, was invited to speak at the New Asia Lectures on Contemporary China 2020/2021 on 19 February. The Lecture is titled “What has Changed and Not Changed in Fifty Years”, and Dr. Wong shared with the audience life-changing events he encountered over the last fifty years.
Dr. Wong was a guest pupil at New Asia College in the 60’s and went on to study Mathematics and Physics at UC Berkeley in the US. He had made significant contributions in the IT sector of China and the US, and also served as consultant for multiple Chinese state-owned enterprises. iASPEC now provides software products and services to the financial, healthcare and cybersecurity industries in China, Hong Kong and the US.

【Cultural Topics】Free Book Li Tung Keung for Collection
|
Published by the Department of Fine Arts and the Alumni Association of Fine Arts Department, CUHK and funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the book Li Tung Keung is now in circulation. Commemorating the late Prof. Li Tung Keung (1931–2019) who had taught at the Department of Fine Arts, CUHK, the book features a collection of essays written by Professor Li on art education, art theories, his works from various periods, as well as articles by artists and students. A chronology of Professor Li’s career and photos of past events were also included in the book.

【Student Development】Traditional Cultures Short Video Competition Results
|
To encourage students to explore different cultures and showcase their creativity, the New Asia College Language and Culture Committee (NALACC) organized a Short Video Competition on the theme “Traditional Cultures from around the World” for the very first time this year. Students from different parts of the world were welcome to submit 3- to 5-minute short videos for the competition. The top three winners and the consolation prize are selected by the NALACC members while the Most Popular Video Award is awarded to the video with the most “likes” on NALACC Facebook page. Submission was closed on 11 April and the Facebook voting ended on 2 May. The results are as follows:

|
“Creativity Contests of Environmental Protection” organized by The Committee on Environmental Protection of New Asia College has come to an end. Results are as follow:

【Staff Engagements】Professor Wei Ren and Professor Calvin Ng Received Awards in the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2021
|
Scientific innovations developed by CUHK received nine medals in the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2021, including one Gold with Congratulations of the Jury Medal, three Gold Medals, two Silver and three Bronze Medals.

【Staff Engagements】Two Activities Organized by the Staff Association
|
(1) DIY Leather Workshop
The Staff Association organized a DIY Leather Workshop on 9 March. Instructor Ms. Isa Lai taught the participants how to make card holders and Japanese omamoris.
Experienced in leather goods design and production, Ms. Lai has worked with several fashion labels on their leather products. She began the workshop by introducing some basic knowledge about leather as a material, then gave detailed instructions on the leather card holder and the Japanese omamori. Because of the complexity of its pattern, participants who chose to make the card holder took longer to finish their item. After the two-hour workshop, participants were all very satisfied with the leather accessories they made.
