【College Updates】College Head Prof. Hector Sun-On Chan was appointed as Associate Vice-President (Education), CUHK

CUHK has approved the appointment of our Head Prof. Hector Sun-On Chan as Associate Vice-President (Education) on a concurrent basis for three years, with effect from 1 August. Prof. Chan will strive to enhance the quality of teaching and learning at the University, and further develop the unique collegiate education system of CUHK.

Prof. Chan is an alumnus of our College. He obtained his BSc degree in Biology in 1986, and MPhil degree in Anatomy in 1988 from CUHK. He was awarded the Croucher Foundation Scholarship to pursue a DPhil degree in Neuroscience at The University of Oxford in 1988.

The below personnel updates in the College management are effective from 1 August 2022:

(1) Prof. Chan Yip Wing-han from The Nethersole School of Nursing, Prof. Cheung Sui-wai from the Department of History, Prof. Huang Yong from the Department of Philosophy, Prof. Ngai To from the Department of Chemistry, and Prof. Wong Wing-tak from the School of Life Sciences joined the Assembly of Fellows.

(2) Former Associate Dean of General Education, Prof. Tse Wai-kit from the Department of History was appointed as Dean of General Education.

【Student Development】New Asia College / Yale University Student Exchange Programme 2021/22

The New Asia / Yale University Student Exchange Programme (YUNA) is a themed exchange programme linking eight students each from the College and Yale University, and enriching students’ understanding of various issues in Hong Kong and the United States.

【Student Development】New Asia College / Ewha Womans University – Global Student Partnership Programme
The opening ceremony with a public lecture was held on 9 July via Zoom.

Global Student Partnership (GSP) Programme, co-organized by New Asia College and Ewha Womans University, is an academic and cultural conference led by students, with the aim of nurturing global leaders through mutual exchange, research study and deepening the understanding of the society and culture of the two regions.

The programme theme this year is “What next after the COP 26: the implications of the climate crisis and collaborative efforts in Asia”. To mark the beginning of this year’s GSP programme, an opening ceremony with a public lecture was held on 9 July via Zoom. Together with our Dean of Students Prof. Cheung Kam-siu, Dr. Samgmi Cho, Vice President for International Affairs, Ewha Womans University, was invited as a distinguished guest.

【Student Development】Results Announcement of Food and Culture Short Video Competition

Voting for the “Food and Culture Short Video Competition” organized by the College Committee on Language and Culture was already closed. Based on the votes casted by nine teaching staff in terms of video content, creativity, use of language and shooting techniques, the final results are as below:

【Staff Engagement】Prof. Yu Jun received the 14th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award from the Chinese Academy of Engineering

Affiliated to the College, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics and Assistant Dean of CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine Prof. Yu Jun received the 14th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award from the Chinese Academy of Engineering for her distinguished achievements in and contribution to gastrointestinal cancer studies.

【Staff Engagement】Prof. Lee Man-chun and Prof. Zhang Xiang were recognized by China’s Excellent Young Scientists Fund 2022

Five young scholars from CUHK have received awards from the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) (2022), and two of them are affiliated to the College – Prof. Lee Man-chun from the Department of Mathematics, and Prof. Zhang Xiang from the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics. Each of the researchers will receive funding of RMB two million to support their scientific research projects in Hong Kong.
【Staff Engagement】Prof. Xu Jianbin awarded appointment as Choh-Ming Li Professor of Electronic Engineering

NA-affiliated Prof. Xu Jianbin, Professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering and Assistant Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Engineering, has recently been awarded Choh-Ming Li Professor of Electronic Engineering.

Prof. Xu received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the Nanjing University in 1983 and 1986, respectively, in Physics and Information Physics. Since 1988, he has pursued further studies in Germany in Nanoscience and related technology. He gained a doctorate degree in 1993 and joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, CUHK. He has been Professor of the Department since 2002.

【Staff Engagement】Prof. Bryan Mercurio Named RGC Senior Research Fellow
Five scholars from CUHK received the 2022/23 RGC Senior Research Fellow Scheme and RGC Research Fellow Scheme awards presented by the Research Grants Council (RGC) in recognition of their distinguished research achievements. Affiliated to the College, Prof. Bryan Mercurio of the Faculty of Law who was named an awardee under the RGC Senior Research Fellow Scheme received a grant of around $7.8 million, with his project entitled “Access to vaccines in a post-COVID-19 world: Sustainable legal and policy options”.

In order to express our heartfelt gratitude to retiring and long-serving colleagues for their dedicated service and contributions to the College over the years, a Farewell Luncheon and Long Service Awards Ceremony was held at Yun Chi Hsien of the College on 23 June 2022. Due to the pandemic, the luncheon was scaled down, but participants were still able to gather and share memorable moments.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 earlier this year, most activities or events of the College were suspended. As the epidemic situation has stabilized lately, the Staff Association organized a number of activities for members.

The First Cultural Talk: Wine Tasting
(1) Wine Tasting

The Committee on College Culture of the  College organized a cultural talk entitled “Wine Tasting” on 7 December 2021 at Yun Chi Hsien of the College. Mr. Wilson Kwok, a wine expert and Sommelier, was invited as the guest speaker.

Mr. Kwok first gave a brief introduction of the wine culture, followed by detailing how different types of wine were brewed and produced. He also shared tips on choosing an appropriate wine. Later in the talk, Mr. Kwok prepared 2 types of wine for participants to taste. Paired with various cold cuts and finger food such as cheese, lemon, foie gras with baguette, etc., the unique flavours of wine were highlighted, making the tasting experience more enjoyable.

【Alumni Connections】Obituary: Dr Vincent H.C. Cheng

Dr. Vincent H.C. Cheng, former Council Chairman of CUHK and former Trustee of New Asia College passed away on 28 August 2022, at the age of 74. The College is profoundly saddened by the passing of Dr. Vincent Cheng and conveys its deepest condolences to his family.
【Alumni Connections】Three alumni appointed as Principal Officials of Sixth-term HKSAR Government

The Central People's Government approved the appointments of Principal Officials of the Sixth-term of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government earlier and three College alumni were on the list. Mr. Chan Mo-po Paul (77/Accountancy) and Mr. Tsang Kwok-wai Erick (86/Journalism and Communication) were reappointed as Financial Secretary, and Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs respectively, while Ms. Mak Mei-kuen Alice (93/English) were appointed as Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs.

Wong Kin-man, born in 1998, is a fine arts student of CUHK. She mainly adopts everyday objects and installations as her art media, focusing on daily life and her own experiences, and trying to explore the relationship between land and art. Wong is keen on making daily observations in the city in order to arouse concerns and responses to community issues through her works, and to connect with people and explore relationships between people.

Born in 1999, Cheng Wing-yan is a fine arts student of CUHK whose works focus on mixed media and installations. She is fond of taking a walk and exploring what people call "everyday life" in the streets which form the core of her works. Currently, she engages ordinary objects in her works, emphasizing relationships between people and converting daily experiences into videos.

Born in 1999, Ella Wong is a visual arts student of the Hong Kong Baptist University, with painting as her main medium. As Ella Wong is a Meme lover who likes the way people think when looking at Memes, she has recently tried to add Meme elements to her paintings.
