The third lecture of the New Asia Lectures on Contemporary China 2016/17 was held in the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, on 17 March this year. Since 2015/16, the lecture series has been endowed by Dato' Wong Kwing-keung, our College trustee. It was our honor to have Mr. Steve Lau Siu-ying, our alumni and trustee of the College, and a famous entrepreneur, as our speaker.
The topic of the lecture was "Striving 30 Years for My Business in Hong Kong and China: A New Angel for 1000 Dreams". Mr Lau graduated from the faculty of Business Administration and developed his business in Mainland China afterwards. He first joined the Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, mainly focused on the business development of the telecommunications in Mainland China. Five years later, Mr Lau established his own China Fortune Group, which was the first company to introduce Nokia into China. China Fortune Group was listed in Hong Kong in 2000. It ranked sixth of China's Top 100 Technological Enterprises in 2003. Since Mr Lau thought investment would be the best way to develop his business, he established Eagles Fund in 2012 and invested more than three hundred million renminbi in around 100 enterprises. "Angel Investor" is rather a new term in China and Hong Kong, compared to US and Europe. Mr Lau shared the reasons for being an angel investor through his personal experience facilitating our understanding of the term, Angel Investor. In the Q and A session, students asked about the ways to raise capital for their own innovative ideas and Mr Lau's personal philosophy of running a business. Mr Lau was willing to answer all questions raised and the atmosphere of this session was passionate.
