Sketching and Cultural Tour to Kyushu, Japan

From 16 to 21 May, 20 students of the College travelled with Prof. Ng Yuet-lau, a renowned Hong Kong painter and President of the Ling Ngai Association as well as six accomplished Chinese painters, to Kyushu, Japan for a sketching and cultural tour. They visited Kitakyushu, the northernmost city of Kyushu, where Beppu, Yufuin and Aso etc. are located. The picturesque landscapes there with spectacular waterfalls, streams, rocks and valleys are perfect sceneries for outdoor sketching practices. Having finished their first drafts of the artworks, they presented them to Prof. Ng for review. With the masterly guidance of Prof. Ng, students learned the importance of compositions, shadows and detailed conversions in paintings. The tutorials enhanced their drawing techniques intensively and instantly. In addition, during the trip, students were able to admire breath-taking nature in close distance, for example, the silk-like waterfall, the sheer cliff and the shimmering lake in reflection of sunlight. The experiences not only broadened their horizons, but also developed their genuine sense of wonder in praise of nature.
