The former University Gallery, which made its debut in 2013, was renamed the CUHK History Gallery in 2022. A large-scale makeover commenced last summer to enhance the Gallery’s facilities and space utility and to accommodate its updated content. The Gallery reopened on 20 September 2023, and its displays introduce the founding history, the unique collegiate system and the significant milestones of the University, while showcasing its achievements in education, its strategic research areas, campus development, international collaborations and mainland engagement. It tells a fascinating tale of the University’s journey towards excellence with purpose and responsibility, through the exhibition of historical photos, objects and multimedia materials.

In addition to the Nobel Prizes and other awards donated by Professor Yang Chen Ning and Professor Charles Kao, new exhibits include the university mace, made in 1964, teaching materials and exam papers from its early years, tennis rackets used in PE classes in the 1980s, and index cards from the dictionary that our founding Vice-Chancellor Dr Choh-Ming Li compiled for leisure. Most of the new materials have been contributed by Colleges, Faculties, departments and units.

On the lower ground floor, two projectors show a 3D model illustrating the transformation of the CUHK campus over its 60-year history. The development of the campus has always been guided by our green vision of sustainability. The once bare hills have become a rolling green landscape, dotted with over 160 buildings.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of CUHK, a thematic exhibition of archival materials relating to the University’s establishment has been curated. These materials include official documents concerning the naming of CUHK and its campus site selection, the golden keys presented to Dr Li by the three founding Colleges, and an architectural drawing of the four pillars at the university's main entrance. This area also includes an interactive installation with 60 elements unique to CUHK, of which visitors can vote for their favourites.

When you visit the Gallery, pick up one of the attractive pamphlets or collect one of the specially designed stamp cards that commemorate CUHK’s 60th anniversary. At the end of your visit, take a selfie in the photo booth in front of CUHK landmarks or other historical backgrounds and cover it with lovely stickers.
