Culture and Language Enhancement

Social English Workshop

The College organised three sessions of Social English Workshop on 30 January, 6 and 13 February 2018 to enhance students' English for different social occasions.

Under different themes for each session including 'How We Introduce Ourselves to Others (Session 1), 'Celebrations and Occasions' (Session 2), and 'Taboos' and 'Broadening Your Experience' (Session 3), Ms Gillian KEW, the tutor, introduced students to cultures of various countries, useful vocabulary and colloquial expressions by interactive ways like individual questions, group discussions and video clip sharing in an interesting and relaxing atmosphere.

Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions

Eight Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions were organised in Term 2, 201718 to encourage students to improve public speaking skills through prepared speeches, impromptu presentations and peer evaluation, under themes like 'Civilisation and Nature', 'Travelling' and 'Love'. Ms Tessa STEWART, Honorary Advisor of United College Toastmasters Club (UCTMC), was invited as General Evaluator in Session 5 and 6 (7 and 21 March 2018 respectively) to advise students on how to improve their public speaking skills.

At the beginning of Session 8 (18 April 2018), the last session in Term 2, 201718, Mr Aaron LEUNG, an experienced Toastmaster from Hong Kong Toastmasters Club, hosted a pre-session workshop for students, the topic of which was 'Impact to Impress'. He shared tips with vivid examples and demonstration on how students can become great orators by ways such as attention to facial expressions, vocal variety and posture. He introduced students to tactics for impressing the audience, such as controlling the five senses of the audience, adding a twist to the speech, and conveying an inspirational message in the speech. After the workshop, Mr LEUNG took on the role of General Evaluator in the session.

Students took pleasure in learning from and evaluating one another's speeches in a relaxing and mutually supportive environment. They were grateful for the facilitators' comments and sharing, which helped to boost their public speaking skills.

To learn how to organise regular meetings according to the requirements of the Toastmasters Club, some participants of the College's Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions were invited to visit the regular meetings of UCTMC on 1 and 15 Mar 2018. The participants observed the flow of the meetings and were enthusiastic in giving short impromptu speeches. They mingled with their peers from the United College after the meetings and shared with one another on public speaking.

Seal Engraving Workshop

Ms Kady FUNG, the founder of Sealing Stone DIY Studio, hosted a seal engraving workshop for students on 28 March 2018 to introduce students to the art of zhuanke. Students learnt to arrange Chinese characters into imaginative patterns and to appreciate the beauty of Chinese characters.
