At this lecture, Professor Tony Chan proposed that mathematics has always been one of the most inscrutable items among the scientific disciplines. Not only is the language of math difficult for a layperson to penetrate, it is also often not obvious why it is relevant to everyday life. In fact, math is both ubiquitous and central to many technologies that we rely on every day. In this talk, intended for a general audience, Professor Chan illustrated this unexpected role of math from a personal perspective.
The lecture was very well received by the public from every walk of life, not to mention those eminent academics, college trustees and alumni who took time out from their tight schedules to attend the event.
