Jointly organised by the Chung Chi College and the New Asia College and co-organised by the Department of History since 2007, the Yu Ying-shih Lecture in History invites an internationally renowned scholar in history every year to conduct lectures and academic exchanges. This year's Yu Ying-shih Lecture in History 2017 was sponsored by The KJ & HK Charitable Trust, and Distinguished Professor of History and NTU Chair Professor of the National Taiwan University Jo-shui Chen was invited to visit Hong Kong in November 2017 to share his views on the concept "Yi 義" in traditional Chinese thinking and culture.
The First Lecture was held at Cho Yiu Hall at CUHK on the afternoon of 9 November 2017. The lecture was entitled " Yi 義 in Early Chinese Thought and its Transformations" and was moderated by Professor Leung Yuen-sang, Dean of the Faculty of Arts of CUHK. The Second Lecture entitled " Yi 義 in Traditional Chinese Culture and Thought: With Comments on Yi and Justice" was held in the Hong Kong Museum of History on 11 November 2017 and was moderated by Professor Lai Ming-chiu, Chairman of the Department of History of CUHK. Many students, staff members and members of the public attended the two lectures, which were significantly beneficial in promoting the study of history in CUHK and in Hong Kong as a whole.
