This year, we invited Professor Huang Chin-shing, Distinguished Research Fellow and Director from the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica in Taiwan to conduct two public lectures in Hong Kong in November 2014. The two lectures attracted many academics and general public. In the question and answer session, audiences were keen to express their views and enjoy in-depth discussion on the topic.
The first lecture was held at 4:30 pm at Cho Yiu Hall at the Chinese University on 6 November 2014. The topic of the lecture was "The Cult of Confucius and the Imperial System of Rites". Prof. Huang discussed the transformation of Confucian Temple from local temple to becoming part of the Imperial System of Rites. He also discussed the characteristics of the Confucian Temple and its symbolic meanings during different dynasties.
The second lecture, "Confucian Ethic and Economic Development: Myth or Fact? " was held in the Lecture Theatre of Hong Kong Central Library on 9 November 2014. Professor Huang discussed the possible impact of Confucianism on the economic development in East Asia, since Confucianism emphasizes education and self-discipline, as the roots of moral knowledge, along with motivation from achievements.
