Dr. Cheng is a College graduate in Economics in 1973. He served as a member of the Trustees of the College between 1998 and 2009, during which he dedicated himself to campus development and the establishment of the College Mentorship Programme. In 2009, he became the first alumnus to serve as the University’s Council Chairman. During his tenure, Dr. Cheng put forth important initiatives including preparations for developing five new colleges, CUHK (Shenzhen), and the CUHK Medical Centre.
As a distingusished leader in the Hong Kong’s banking and financial sector, Dr. Vincent Cheng was the first Chinese Executive Director of HSBC Holdings and the first Chinese Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, and made significant contributions to the local banking industries. Dr. Cheng was also devoted to public service and has served as a member of the Legislative Council, the Executive Council, and an associate member of the Central Policy Unit of the HKSAR Government, which exemplary efforts have been made for the development of Hong Kong.
