Residents' Association

The Fourth Executive Committee of the Residents' Association, Calyx, in office since November 2017, has organised a number of activities, the details of which are as follows:

The Lunar New Year Celebrations

Calyx organised a series of activities celebrating the Lunar New Year in 2018, attracting around 30 participants. To show the festive atmosphere, the committee members hung red lanterns in the hostel. A highlight was the evening session on Calligraphy Writing and Paper Cutting, held on 13 February. In order to enhance cultural exchange, these Chinese traditional arts were shown to foreign students with interesting videos. Finishing their 'masterpieces' of Chinese calligraphy and paper cutting, they enjoyed the traditional festive snacks prepared by Calyx. Afterwards, they placed their calligraphy and paper cutting works on room doors, desks, and walls to spread blessings and good luck. The Lunar New Year, an important festival in Hong Kong, took on greater significance in the College thanks to the efforts of Calyx and the participation of residents.

The Handmade Series—Resin Wish Bottle DIY Workshop

Calyx held the Resin Wish Bottle DIY Workshop on 1 March 2018, attracting 12 residents. They were each given a little glass bottle with a handy key ring attached to the cork stopper. With their imagination and creativity, they filled the bottles with the 'Milky Way'resin in dreamy hues, glitter and tiny decorations, making them perfect gifts for their beloved ones.

The Handmade Series—Canvas Bag Painting Workshop

Twenty residents joined the Canvas Bag Painting Workshop held by Calyx on 8 March 2018. They painted their exclusive designs on canvas tote bags, upgrading the plain bags into pieces of artwork. It was a chance for residents to demonstrate their creativity and talents for art and design. They were all content with their customised and unique works.

CWChallenge: Basketball Competition

Calyx held the Basketball Competition on 16 March 2018 and more than 10 residents joined it. Basketball is a popular ball game among Hong Kong students, so the competition aimed to gather residents. The competition brought participants an evening full of cheers and excitement. It also enhanced the bonding among participants.

CWChallenge: E-sports Competition

E-sports is one of the most popular leisure activities for students. To help residents beat stress, Calyx held the E-Sports Competition on 22 March 2018. More than 10 participants fought it out in the virtual world of video games. The highlights of the night were the racing classic Mario Kart and the hot game League of Legends.

Easter Egg Hunt

To celebrate Easter with residents, Calyx held an Easter Egg Hunt on 28 March 2018. More than 20 residents had great fun searching for hidden Easter eggs around the hostel. The game brought together residents to share the joy of the festival at the College.

CWChallenge: Singathon

The Singathon was organised on 10 April 2018 to find out the 'potential superstar' of the College. To warm up the atmosphere of the competition, Calyx invited the famous singer Mr Hinary LAU and the HKU Lee Hall Band as honourable guests. The competition was also graced with the presence of the College Master Prof Wai-Yee CHAN and the Warden of the College Hostel Prof WONG Suk Ying. Over 20 contestants demonstrated their talent for singing and performing, and 80 residents came to support their friends.

Song Dedications on Wednesdays

In Term 2, 2017–18, Calyx continued to hold a widely welcomed song dedication session during the communal dinners on Wednesdays. It was a platform for residents to express their thankfulness to someone through song requests. It could help students share their happiness  and give encouragement to one another amidst their hard work, especially during the final exam periods.

Dessert Nights

Calyx held a Dessert Night every few months with fantastic and featured desserts in order to gather residents. The second Dessert Night, held on 19 April 2018, continued the success of the first. The Chinese steamed milk pudding, prepared by the committee members, attracted over 30 residents again. Calyx held surveys collecting residents' opinions in order to cater to their tastes, which was obviously a big challenge but also a great learning opportunity for the committee members.
