Winners of the Hong Kong Cup All Japan University Student Ambassadors English Programme
In March 2018, the College welcomed the winners of the Hong Kong Cup All Japan University Student Ambassadors English Programme 2017–18 and 2015–16, organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Tokyo) and the Japan News to encourage university students in Japan to explore the dynamism and rich diversity of Hong Kong. The Japanese students resided in the College hostel and had some memorable moments with our students.
Winners in 2017–18
Four winners of the programme in 2017–18, Ms Satomi HONDA, Mr Masaomi MURAKAMI, Ms Honoka NISHIO and Ms Nanako TATSUMI, attended a 10-day exchange programme at CUHK and stayed at the College during 2–12 March 2018.
On 7 March evening, the Japanese students were invited to join a College communal dinner in which they had a delightful exchange with some participants of the College Toastmasters Club Taster Sessions, the facilitator of the session that evening, Ms Tessa STEWART, and Prof Kenneth YOUNG.
After the dinner, the Japanese students attended the Toastmasters Club Taster Session. They made impromptu speeches to share their views on the session topic, Education, and learnt tips on public speaking from Ms STEWART and other student participants. They found the session interesting and novel, as it was the first time they have ever joined a Toastmasters meeting. They mingled with the College students and enjoyed snacks and wine after the session.
On 11 March, the Japanese students were accompanied by three Resident Tutors, two representatives from the Resident Association, and two students from mainland China to visit Sai Kung. They all spent a great time enjoying a dim sum lunch in a Chinese restaurant near the pier. The student buddies introduced the names of the food to the Japanese students and taught them their pronunciation in Cantonese. Our guests shared that many Japanese have an affection for yum cha, so it is one of their must-do activities in Hong Kong. The tour ended with a short boat tour to islands nearby, where they could appreciate the breathtaking natural landscapes in Hong Kong.
Winners in 2015-16
In 2016, Mr Satoshi ASANO, Ms Yu IWAMA, Ms Hakugyoku KYO and Mr Koki MATSUMURA, winners of the programme in 2015–16, visited the College for the first time, promoting cultural ties, friendship and goodwill between Hong Kong and Japan.
The College was pleased to receive again the four Japanese students, who re-visited CUHK from 11 to 14 March, hearing about their recent life in Japan. Their stay at the College hostel recalled their fond memories with the College students in 2016. They found and enjoyed a new feature in the College — the signature coffee cart.
