The officiating guests included Prof. Ying-Li Liu, former member of the Standing Committee and Executive Vice-Mayor of Shenzhen Municipal Government, President of Shenzhen Entrepreneur Association and Honorary Fellow of CUHK; Prof. Huan-Ming Yang, Chairman and Professor, BGI; Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Mr. Jin-Qiang Mo, Deputy Director General of Education, Science and Technology Department of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Ms. Yu-Rong Guo, Secretary of Shenzhen Municipal Education Committee and Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau; Prof. Jian Wang, President of BGI; and Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, Founding Director of The Innovation Institute and Director of School of Biomedical Sciences, CUHK.
During the Ceremony, Prof. Liu, Prof. Yang and Prof. Sung delivered speeches addressing the missions and visions of The Innovation Institute and the history of collaboration between CUHK and BGI, whereas Prof. Chan introduced the development plans of The Innovation Institute. The Ceremony was followed by a public lecture of Prof. Yang entitled "Genomics and Personalized Medicine".
Our School will play a significant role, with close coordination with the Office of Academic Links (China), in setting up the various aspects of The Innovation Institute so as to ensure its smooth operation and collaboration with the BGI-Shenzhen in the near future. Apart from the directorship taken up by our School Director, Prof. Stephen Tsui and Mr. Chi-Ho Chan have been appointed as the Associate Director (Education) and Senior Manager (Administration), respectively. Other Teachers of the School will also contribute substantially to the teaching of the postgraduate programmes in genomics and bioinformatics to be offered by its Graduate Division of Genomics and Bioinformatics from the academic year 2011/12 and of other postgraduate programmes in different fields of genomic sciences to be available in the next few years.
With the advanced technologies available at the CUHK and the BGI-Shenzhen and the long history of research collaboration between both sides, The Innovation Institute will be favorably positioned to nurture multi-disciplinary experts and talents and advocate innovative thinking in the many known and unknown fields of genomic sciences, and to promote applications of cross-disciplinary research in clinical genomics.
