The fifth "Yen Kwo-Yung Lecture in Life Sciences", co-organised by the New Asia College and the School of Life Sciences, aimed at enabling the general public and students to better understand life sciences and to appreciate their essence, while promoting the values and application of life sciences in modern society. A total of three lectures of "Yen Kwo-Yung Lecture in Life Sciences", hosted by Sir Richard J. Roberts, Ph.D., F.R.S., D.S., 1993 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine and Chief Scientific Officer of New England Biolabs Inc., were held from 28 to 30 March 2019.
The first lecture "Exploring Bacterial Methylomes" was held at the Science Centre of the CUHK on 28 March. Sir Richard shared the fruits of research on Bacterial DNA Methylation and Methylomes, and presented ways to apply bacteria in novel epigenetic regulation. The second lecture "Why I Love Bacteria" was held at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of the CUHK on 29 March. Sir Richard discussed the microscopic world during the lecture. The third lecture "Why You Should Embrace GMOs" was held at the Hong Kong Science Museum on 30 March. Sir Richard discussed the importance of introducing GMO crops to developing countries. This year's "Yen Kwo-Yung Lecture in Life Sciences" was well received, and the participants actively asked interesting questions. The New Asia College would like to express again its gratitude to Dr. Yen Kai-Ming for establishing the "Mr. Yen Kwo-Yung Memorial Fund", which continuously supported the organisation of the lecture series.
