The lecture series of "Lingnan Literati and Daoism Research Project" started with a talk by Li Ruo-qing, professor of The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. This interesting and insightful lecture was held on 14 March 2019, co-organized by the Centre for Studies of Daoist Culture and The CUHK–Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Asia-Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies, CUHK. Through an analysis of Xie Lansheng's Changxingxingzhai Diary 常惺惺齋日記, Prof. Li revealed the joy and corruption of the gentry's life in Guangzhou before the outbreak of the First Opium War. He believed that the flourishing age of the Kangxi–Qianlong reigns had contributed to the arrogance of the upper-class elites in China, which was likely one of the reasons for the eventual invasion by the foreign powers and the decline of the Qing dynasty.
