The College was honored to have Prof. Peter Bol, Vice Provost for Advances in Learning and Charles H. Carswell Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations of Harvard University, as the guest speaker of the 27th Ch'ien Mu Lecture in History and Culture in April 2014. Prof. Bol delivered three public talks on Neo-Confucianism and Intellectual History during his visit. A banquet in honor of Prof. and Mrs. Bol was held on 4 April at Yun Chi Hsien, offering our warmest welcome to the speaker.
The first talk "Moral Philosophy and Social Movement: Neo-Confucianism in Later Imperial China" was held at 12noon on 4 April at Lecture Theatre 4 of Lee Shau Kee Building, CUHK, and was moderated by Prof. David Faure, Wei Lun Professor of History, CUHK. The second talk "Paths Taken, Paths Avoided: Assessing Neo-Confucianism's Role in China's History" was held at 3pm on 6 April at the Lecture Theatre of the Hong Kong Museum of History, with Prof. Lau Kwok-ying, Professor, of the Department of Philosophy, CUHK, as the moderator. The third talk "The Methodologies of Intellectual History" was held at 4:30pm on 9 April Lecture Theatre 4 of Lee Shau Kee Building, CUHK, which was moderated by Prof. John Lagerwey, Professor of Chinese Studies at the Centre for China Studies, CUHK. The three talks received an enthusiastic response and inspired fruitful discussion between the speaker and the audience.
