Thanks to the generous support from The D. H. Chen Foundation in recent years, the College Service Teams have launched their summer service projects smoothly, and throughout the years, the projects have positively influenced the lives of the university and secondary school participants.
Publication of Research Report on Multi-year Summer Service Project
To document the Service Teams' commitment to The D. H. Chen Foundation to carry out aspects of action research and to disseminate the practice model as one of the larger community aims of the multi-year service project, a research report—‘The effects of a social service project on personal growth and academic performance in secondary school students from low socioeconomic status’—has been compiled by Prof CHAIR Sek Ying, former Chair and current member of the College Service Committee, Ms Cecilia SIT, former member of the Committee, Ms NG Wai Ching Irene, member of the Committee, Ms MAK Yuen Ying and Mr LI Kwun Hang, two Junior Research Assistants recruited by the College. Ms MAK was the President of the Service Team 2014–15, while Mr LI was one of the helpers of the summer camp under the summer service project in 2016. The report was published online on 29 March 2021 in the International Journal of Inclusive Education, a peer-reviewed journal. In this report, the impact of the multi-year service project for disadvantaged students was evaluated through pre-test/ post-test study design and qualitative interviews. The results showed significant improvements in the students' personal growth and proved the project were effective.Please click here to read the published report.Summer Service Project 2021With the guidance and support from the College Service Committee, the Ninth Service Team (2020–21), Benevolence, is planning this year's summer service project, ‘Understanding Socially Disadvantaged School Youths through a Social Service Endeavour 2021’, the service targets of which will be students of HHCKLA Buddhist Ching Kok Secondary School. Benevolence has initially proposed activities including an orientation day, a career guidance activity, a practical IT lesson, a night talk and foreign language classes. The modes of the activities will be subject to the development of the pandemic in Hong Kong.
