Progress of the preparation for the construction of fifth student hostel

To implement our aim of providing a favorable learning and living environment for students, we are planning to build a new hostel. This is expected to provide an additional three hundred hostel places, to enable more students to enjoy the environment with Chinese cultural characteristics and experience living with other students.

The preliminary construction design proposal was finished and the consultation followed last year. The new hostel will have a height limit and the construction design proposal will consider carefully impact on the New Asia College campus and especially the Water Tower scenery.

The Legislative Council Public Work Team has not included this project into this fiscal year in order to apply for funding. After detailed study by the Construction Committee, two design proposals were chosen. A comprehensive consultation with students on the two proposals was carried out through the New Asia Student Union and the results collected in March this year. The committee is currently discussing the final design proposal with architects. It is planned that the detailed design drawings will be submitted this July and the construction will start May 2015. It is expected that the construction will be finished within twenty four to thirty months and before the end of 2017.

Using construction costs of early 2014, it is estimated that more than 190 million dollars is required to build a new hostel with three hundred hostel places and we have to bear more than 50 million Hong Kong dollars. We have to raise enough funds to meet the government requirements on funding after the approval of the funding and during the construction.

In the process of constructing the hostel, we will continue to provide up to date information to teachers and students. In the future, we hope that alumnus of the college and friends from different fields can continue to support us and help construct a good learning environment for the students of New Asia College.
