Sharing Session on Projects in Celebration of Dr. Tin Ka-ping's 100th Birthday

To celebrate the 100th birthday of its Founder Dr. Tin Ka-ping, the Tin Ka Ping Foundation (the Foundation) has donated HK$3 million to each of the nine local universities to support student development and to enhance the quality of education.  The donation to CUHK is being used to support the research project titled 2018 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth of Department of Sports Science and Physical Education and the I·CARE Achievers Programme of this Centre.

In appreciation of the generosity of the Foundation, a sharing session was held on 22 March at CUHK.  It was graced by the presence of members of the Foundation including Mr. Tin Hing-sin, Chairman of the Board, Mr. Tai Hay-lap, Vice Chairman of the Board, as well as Mr. Tin Wing-sin and Prof. Kenneth Young, both Directors of the Foundation.  Prof. Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President, Prof. Alvin Leung, Dean of Education and Prof. Joseph Sung, Co-Chairman of the Steering Committee for Promoting Personal Development through Social and Civic Engagement also attended the session as honourable guests.

Prof. Stephen Wong, Chairman of Department of Sports Science and Physical Education and Ms. Irene Ng, Director of this Centre expressed gratitude to Dr. Tin Ka-ping and the Foundation, and introduced the respective projects supported by the donation.  The I·CARE Achievers Programme will be formally launched in 2018-19.  Throughout a three-year span, participants are required to complete a number of stipulated tasks which will help them attain overall quality and finer attributes in five traditional Chinese virtues: integrity, intellect, physique, relationship and aesthetics.  When the tasks have been accomplished at certain levels, participants will be awarded corresponding I·CARE Achievers titles, thus allowing them to monitor and modify their experiential learning progress in a systematic way.  A number of role models and prominent figures will offer support to the programme as advisors to contribute their wisdom, expertise and experience.

Students who have actively participated in various I·CARE activities were also invited to join the session to share their gains.  They included Chan Ying (Public Health - Doctoral Year 2), Chau Wang-fung (Geography and Resource Management - Year 4), Cheung Chi-yan (Earth System Science - Year 2), Ho Tin-lai (Biochemistry - Year 4), Lau Chun-yuk (History - Year 4), Ng On-wa (Medicine - Year 6), Wong Yuen-cheuk (Medicine - Year 5) and Poon Hoi-lam (Psychology - Year 3).
