Ms. Eva Y. K. Lau, student of the Higher Diploma in Applied Korean Language and Culture, has been studying at the School since 2010. She was one of the 45 finalists from all around the world including Korea, Germany, Australia, India, China, etc. in the 17th World Korean Speech Contest 2012 held on July 14 in Jakarta, Indonesia and took home the 2nd Runner-up.
The World Korean Speech Contest is an international event providing an avenue for learners of the Korean language to come together and share a cultural exchange experience. It is organised by Korean Eloquence Association with sponsoring organisations from the government of the Republic of Korea including Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Development, Ministry of Unification, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
While recalling the preparation and drilling for the Contest, Eva said, "I am really thankful to CUSCS's Korean lecturers for their teaching, support and encouragement, which helped me snatch the championship in the Korean Speech Contest 2011 in Hong Kong. I then represented Hong Kong in the World Korean Speech Contest and was awarded the 2nd Runner-up. During the past two years of study in CUSCS, our Korean lecturers have been very helpful and taught me not only the Korean language but also the culture. Without their support and help, I can never imagine that I am capable of speaking Korean confidently in only two years of study and coming on the stage to represent Hong Kong in this prestigious international contest."
Eva is not the only one in the spotlight. Ms. Leung Yuet-hung, student of the Higher Diploma in Contemporary Japanese, claimed first place in the Japanese Speech Contest organised by the Japan Society of Hong Kong held on July 8. She gave a speech sharing her own experiences of travelling and meeting Japanese culture lovers in different places around the world. Strong self-confidence and exceptional oratory skills set her apart from others. She thanked the School and lecturers for encouraging her to participate in the Contest, winning which made her more determined in pursuing a bachelor's degree in Japanese.
