Yen Kwo-Yung Lecture in Life Sciences by Professor Tsui Lap-Chee

2015 marked the beginning of "Yen Kwo-Yung Lecture in Life Sciences". The series of lectures, co-organised by New Asia College, CUHK and School of Life Sciences, CUHK, aims at promoting the understanding, essence, values and application of Life Sciences in modern society among the general public and students.

The three lectures of The First "Yen Kwo-Yung Lecture in Life Sciences" were held from 10th to 11 April 2015. Professor Tsui Lap-Chee was invited as the speaker for the three lectures.

The first lecture "A formula for success – Right time, right place and right people" was held at 11:30 a.m. on 10 April in Sir Run Run Shaw Hall at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. As a biomedical scientist for over three decades and the President and Vice Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong for almost twelve years, Professor Tsui Lap-Chee shared the insight and experiences learnt in his career. Three key elements; the ability to capture the opportunity at the right time, the importance of a conductive working environment and the availability of talented members who are committed to working together as a team, have contributed to his success.

The second lecture "Working in the Frontiers of Biomedical Research" was held at 4 p.m. on the same day in Lecture Theatre 2, Mong Man Wai Building at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Tsui Lap-Chee amused the audience with experience gained from his scientific career, particularly in how he explored uncharted areas and used unconventional approaches to tackle problems in biomedical research.

The third lecture "Gene and Health" was held at 4 p.m. on 11 April in the Hong Kong Science Museum. Professor Tsui Lap-Chee introduced basic knowledge about genes and illustrated the relationship between our genes and health.

"Yen Kwo-Yung Lecture in Life Sciences" received wide public support, as well as from renowned scholars, members in the Board of Trustees and alumni who spent their precious time with us in the lectures. All lectures were full houses and there were enthusiastic interactions between Professor Tsui and the audience in the Q&A section. New Asia College again expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Yen Kai-Ming for the endowment "Mr. Yen Kwo-Yung Memorial Fund" which makes these meaningful academic lectures possible.
