New Asia Lectures on Contemporary China by Mr. Zhang Jun Sheng

Chairman of the Development Committee of Zhejiang University, Mr. Zhang Jun Sheng, who was the guest speaker of the "New Asia Lectures on Contemporary China", shared at the Student Dinner Colloquia with a topic "My 60 Years' Journey in the University" on February 3 evening.  The lecture, which was hosted by Professor Du Julan of the Department of Economics, attracted a number of students and teachers.

Mr. Zhang, who served as the Deputy Director and Spokesman of the New China News Agency (Hong Kong Branch), is a senior academic in the Mainland China and has been teaching in Zhejiang University for many years.  He is committed to the development of higher education in the Mainland.  Mr. Zhang has been living and working at University for over 60 years, and has a thorough understanding of higher education in the Mainland.  Owing to a lack of importance placed on nurturing undergraduates and postgraduates in mainland universities, the overall academic standard is low.

In contrast, American professors spend substantial effort nurturing their undergraduates.  Though the development of higher education in China is comparatively slower than in western countries, Mr. Zhang believed that China would continue to improve, especially in the areas of aerospace and nuclear technologies, where they hold leading positions.  Finally, Mr. Zhang encouraged our college students to have big dreams and noble morals, to help build up a better society.
