The exhibitions were highlights of the celebratory events for the 70th anniversary of the New Asia College, and sought to present more in-depth Mr. Ting' art works. "Bonding Through Stone", moreover, was the first dedicated exhibition of Ting's seal carving, and demonstrated the unique style of Ting's seals.
The first exhibition, "Inspiring Brush: Works of Ting Yin-yung Courtesy of His Students and Friends in New Asia College", was a sequel to an exhibition held last year to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Ting's death. From the exhibits of this previous exhibition, 38 were selected to be put on display again this time, alongside 16 items that had never been displayed before. Mr. Ting was a pioneer in blending Chinese and Western art and was renowned for his freehand ink painting, in which simple, child-like brushstrokes were applied in his unique style. The second exhibition, "Bonding Through Stone", featured Ting's 120 imprints and 40 original seals, which fully demonstrated Ting's remarkable achievements in his art of incorporating painting into seal carving.
Mr. Ting had nurtured numerous talents during his 21 years of teaching in the Department of Fine Arts of CUHK. A number of the exhibits were created during this period, while many precious art pieces and seal carvings shown at the two exhibitions were donated or lent out by Ting's students and friends. This not only showed that Ting's generous spirit had lived on, but also manifested the deep bonding between Ting and his students and friends.
