Significant Special Collections Acquisition

A Chinese Chrestomathy in the Canton Dialect Bridgman, Elijah Coleman, 1841

The Library has acquired a rare copy of the original 1841 edition of this renowned title, which signifies the important Western missionary efforts in the Canton region of China. Authored by Bridgeman, the first American missionary appointed to China, who was also a writer, a Bible translator and a respected sinologist, the book was one of the earliest texts for learning Cantonese. It provides valuable insights into Chinese language and culture and depicts an image of China shaped by Western perceptions.

General Description of Shanghae and Its Environs, Extracted from Native Authorities Medhurst, Walter Henry, Mission Press, 1850

A very rare first edition in a fine binding of tan half calf and marbled boards, this volume is typographically printed in Chinese and English and completed with six folding lithographic maps from Chinese drawings of Shanghai and its districts. Medhurst, a printer turned missionary, worked at the London Missionary Society Presses in Malacca and Batavia from 1817 to 1842 before moving to Shanghai in 1843 after the signing of the Treaty of Nanking. This book is believed to be the first secular work to be printed typographically in Shanghai.

This database contains transcripts of global radio and television broadcasts, telegraphy messages and news sources translated into English and summarised by the BBC Monitoring Service. It is classified as “open-source intelligence” (OSINT). OSINT is the collection and analysis of data gathered from open, publicly available sources to produce actionable intelligence. OSINT is primarily used in government, national security and policy functions and is of value to analysts addressing classified, unclassified or proprietary intelligence requirements. In the case of BBC Monitoring: Summary of World Broadcasts (SWB), the intelligence was directed primarily at the government of the United Kingdom to assist with threat assessment and to support the making of informed policy decisions.
