College Activities

The College organised the following activities, talks and workshops in February and March 2018 to enrich students' campus life:

DIY Bouquet Workshop

Resident Tutor Ms Miki WONG held the DIY Bouquet Workshop on 12 February 2018. Over 20 participants including both local and international students had a good time sitting together and chatting while preparing the flowers. They learnt to arrange a bouquet and enclose it with coloured wraps.

Night Talk: Diet and Health—From the Point of View of Chinese Medicine

During the Night Talk on 1 March 2018, Prof JIANG Yuanan, Professor of Practice in Chinese Medicine of CUHK, spoke on the relationship between diet and health from the point of view of traditional Chinese medicine. He explained how qi is important to human bodies, how the five flavours help the function of the five organs to balance our health, and how to maintain a good diet based on the concept of jie. Participants had a chance to understand the mystery of their bodies and enjoy brown sugar ginger tea.

Make-up Essentials Workshop

To equip students with basic skincare and make-up skills, Resident Tutor Ms Miki WONG organised the Make-up Essentials Workshop on 6 March 2018. A professional make-up artist shared skincare tips and demonstrated make-up skills. The students were also pleased to have beauty talks and share cosmetics among themselves. They had in-class practice and sought personal consultation from the make-up artist with their own make-up products. The workshop ran smoothly in an enjoyable atmosphere.

CUHK Blood Donation Campaign 2018

For the third consecutive year, the College joined the CUHK Blood Donation Campaign co-organised by the Office of Student Affairs and the Hong Kong Red Cross. A Donor Centre was set up at the College premises on 14 March 2018. This year the number of participants increased to about thirty students and staff member, some of whom were first-time donors.

Some student donors would like to give blood regularly after they had learnt that they could save up to three lives with only one blood donation.  The College is pleased to join hands with students in this meaningful act of service.

Floor Gathering

A floor gathering was held by Resident Tutor Mr Toby LAU on 15 March 2018 for residents to relax after the mid-term exam period and meet new friends. Around 15 students from different floors of the hostel took part. They had a wonderful time chatting with one another about their campus life while enjoying the light refreshments served.

Night Talk: Our Brain as Pianist

Piano playing is considered one of the most complex actions directed by the human brain, involving the simultaneous employment of hundreds of muscles. Piano performance demands profound musical knowledge, excellent motor skills, and complex emotional insights.

At the night talk held on 21 March 2018, Eitan GLOBERSON, Professor of Piano and Conducting at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, presented a novel approach, demonstrating how neuroscientific knowledge can shed light on music performance and other highly complex human activities. He also discussed in detail the cognitive and motor processes involved in piano playing, illustrated with live performance of excerpts.

Floor Gathering: DIY Chocolate Lava Bonbons & Eco-friendly Mosquito Repellent

The Floor Gathering in which students learnt to make chocolate lava bonbons and eco-friendly mosquito repellent was held by Resident Tutors Ms Elaine WONG, Mr John YE and Mr Toby LAU on 22 March 2018. There were around 20 participants.

Elaine hosted the chocolate lava bonbon making session, teaching students how to make soft-centred chocolate bonbons with moulds. Students were asked to prepare the liquid chocolate and pour it into the moulds, to chill  in the fridge. While they were waiting for the chocolates to harden, they were chatting with one another. One student even performed magic tricks he had learnt to entertain his College mates.

In parallel, Toby hosted the mosquito repellent making session. He taught students to make the repellent by mixing  wormwood powder with lemongrass powder. It was simple to make, safe to use and  environmentally friendly.
