School of Biomedical Sciences Research Day 2011
The School of Biomedical Sciences Research Day 2011 was successfully held on 31 May 2011 in Mong Man Wai Building, CUHK. Similar to the one held last year, the event was officiated by Prof. Tai-Fai Fok, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, Director of the School.
Symposium organized by the Stem Cell and Regeneration Center
The Stem Cell and Regeneration Center (SCRC) led by Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences held successfully its first scientific symposium on 9 June 2011.
Inauguration Ceremony of "The CUHK-BGI Innovation Institute of Trans-omics"

The Inauguration Ceremony of the CUHK-BGI Innovation Institute of Trans-omics (The Innovation Institute) was held at Cho Yiu Hall, CUHK on 18 July 2011. The Innovation Institute is jointly established by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and BGI (previously known as Beijing Genomics Institute) – Shenzhen, China.

The Inaugural Ceremony of the Executive Committee of Postgraduate Student Association of the School of Biomedical Sciences (PSASBS) was held on 28 July 2011 in Room 505, Basic Medical Sciences Building, CUHK.

Orientation Ceremony for the freshmen of the Division of Biomedical Sciences, SBS
The Orientation Ceremony for the freshmen of the Division of Biomedical Sciences, SBS was held on 5 Aug 2011 in Room 202, Basic Medical Sciences Building, CUHK.  Organized by the Executive Committee of Postgraduate Student Association of School of Biomedical Sciences (PSASBS), the Ceremony attracted more than 30 SBS staff members and students to attend.

Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, Director of SBS, has recently been appointed as the Founding Director of "The CUHK-BGI Innovation Institute of Trans-omics" ("The Innovation Institute").

Appointment of Prof. David Yew as Core Member of the Research Advisory Group (RAG) of the Narcotics Division, the Security Bureau, HKSAR
Prof. David Yew of our School has been appointed as a Core Member of the Research Advisory Group (RAG), the Narcotics Division, Security Bureau, HKSAR for a period of two years with effect from 1 July 2011.
The NSFC Grants 2011 obtained by School members
Six of our School members has been awarded the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) grants 2011, which grossed a total of RMB 3.01 million (approximately HK dollar 3.67 million).  These successful proposals have accounted for 24% out of the 25 CUHK proposals accepted by NSFC. These investigators are:
RGC GRF 2011-12 obtained by School members
In the Research Grant Council (RGC) General Research Fund (GRF) 2011-2012 exercise, a total of 10 research projects totaling HK$9.58 million were successfully funded. These funded projects will commence in the last quarter of 2011 and the corresponding investigators are:
Prof. Hsiao-Chang Chan being awarded the National Major Basic Research Program (973 funding program)
Prof. Hsiao-Chang Chan of our School has been awarded the National Major Basic Research Program (973 funding program) for her joint research project with the Women's Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The funded project is entitled "Investigation of ART-induced embryo-fetus-origin diseases risk factors and underlying mechanisms", with an approved amount of RMB 25 million.

The 13th International Symposium of the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA), entitled "Bioscience for the 21st Century: Emerging Frontiers and Evolving Concepts", was held in Baiyun International Convention Centre, Guangzhou, China between 25 and 29 July 2011. The Symposium attracted more than a thousand of conferees to attend, which included Nobel laureates and renowned scientists in the fields of biological and biomedical sciences all over the world. A wide range of topics such as biopharmacology, biotechnology, cancer biology, gene regulation, microbiology, immunology, neurosciences, structural biology, stem cells, genomics, etc., were covered in the Symposium.

On 22 June 2011, Prof. Wai-Yee Chan, Director of SBS, Prof. Gang Li, Chief of the Stem Cell and Regeneration Program, and Prof. Kingston Mak, member of the Stem Cell and Regeneration Program attended the Conference on "Stem Cell, Regenerative Medicine and Cancer" which was held at the South Campus, Shenzhen University.
Visit of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)
Representatives of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) including Prof. Yi Wang, Vice Director, Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, NSFC, and Prof. Zhang-Cai Yan, Director, Division of Life Sciences, NSFC, together with Ms. Lydia L. J. Lin, Deputy Managing Director, Beijing-Hong Kong International Training Centre, visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 23 May 2011.
Visit of the Vice-Minister of The Ministry of Education of China

Dr. Du Zhanyuan, Vice-Minister of The Ministry of Education of China (MOE), led a delegation to visit The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 19 May 2011.  Apart from meeting with the senior management of the University, Dr. Du and the delegates were arranged to visit the respective MOE Key Laboratories at the CUHK, including the MOE Key CUHK-Jinan University Joint Laboratories for Regenerative Medicine housed at the School of Biomedical Sciences.
