6th Chinese Academy of Engineering Academicians Visit Programme cum Lecture Series
A delegation of 5 Academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) visited the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) under the CAE Academicians Visit Programme from 19 to 22 November 2013. The delegation comprised Prof. Li Guojie and Prof. Jiang Jingshan of the Division of Information and Electronic Engineering; Prof. Wang Jiayao of the Division of Civil Hydraulic and Architecture Engineering; and Prof. Xu Xiangde and Prof. Xu Jianmin of the Division of Environment, Light & Textile Industries Engineering.
The delegates were warmly received by Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor; Provost Prof. Benjamin Wah; Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Xu Yangsheng, President of CUHK Shenzhen; Prof. Wong Ching-ping, Dean of Faculty of Engineering; Prof. David Chen, Chairman of the Department of Geography and Resource Management (GRM); and Prof. Lin Hui, Director of the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science (ISEIS). Members of the delegation paid visit to the Faculty of Engineering, GRM and ISEIS and met with relevant faculty members for academic exchange. Visiting the research facilities of the University, delegates were given reports on the latest developments of relevant projects. Representatives from CUHK and CAE took the opportunity to exchange ideas and explore possibilities for further collaboration. The delegates also visited the Science Park and Hong Kong Observatory.
On 20 November, the academicians delivered five public lectures in the Lecture Series by Academicians and shared their experience and expertise in their respective fields of research with audience on campus. Prof. Li Guojie delivered a lecture on computer science and big data; Prof. Jiang Jingshan reviewed the development of space remote sensing at his talk; Prof. Wang Jiayao gave presentation on cartology in the information era; Prof. Xu Xiangde talked about the atmospheric water cycle in Tibetan Plateau; and Prof. Xu Jianmin gave an overview of meteorological satellite data processing and applications. About two hundred people including academics, researchers and students from CUHK and other institutions were attracted to join the lectures.

CUHK MoE-Microsoft Key Laboratory Workshop on Big Data Research
CUHK MOE-Microsoft Key Laboratory Workshop on Big Data Research was held on CUHK campus on 20 November 2013. The Workshop was organized by CUHK MoE - Microsoft Key Laboratory of Human-Centric Computing and Interface Technologies (Key Laboratory) between CUHK and Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA).
The Workshop included research talks given by scholars and experts of CUHK and Microsoft Research Asia. Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK officiated at the opening of the event with Prof. Hsiao-Wuen Hon, Managing Director of MSRA, and Prof. Helen Meng, Director of CUHK MoE-Microsoft Key Laboratory on Human-centric Computing & Interface Technologies. At the opening ceremony, Prof. Sung introduced the establishment of the Big Data Decision Analytics Research Center which will be a multi-disciplinary research center that connects Big Data engineering with different disciplines across CUHK. Prof. Hon announced the awards of the Microsoft Regional Seed Grant Projects under the CUHK Big Data proposal and 2 PhD students of the Faculty of Engineering who are elected Microsoft Fellows 2013.The workshop served as a key research event to reinforce and strengthen the collaboration of CUHK with MSRA in Big Data research.
The CUHK-Microsoft Joint Laboratory of Human-centric Computing and Interface Technologies was established in 2005 to dedicate its efforts to the improvement of human-centric computing and interface technologies. The Joint Laboratory was conferred the national status by the Ministry of Education in 2008 in recognition of its scientific and research achievements.

2013 Writers @CUHK Programme
2013 Writers @CUHK was held in the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in November. The programme was co-organized by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of CUHK and the Chinese Writers Press Group with the support from the Office of Academic Links (China) of CUHK. Writers paying visit to CUHK in 2013 were Mr. Yu Hua, author of the novel To Live (HuoZhe) and Mr. Yan Lianke, author of Dream of Ding Village, Yu Jian, author of 60 Poems and Ms. Huang Beijia, author of Carnival Every Night.
During the visit in CUHK, the four authors gave lectures on campus and took part in seminars to promote academic exchange in Chinese Literature. They also met with representatives from Chinese Language and Literature Department of CUHK for academic exchange. The programme not only built and enhanced ties between CUHK and the scholars from Mainland China in Chinese Literature, but also maximizes the unique cultural advantage of Hong Kong.
