CUHK-CAS Partnership Steering Committee Convenes 4th Annual Meeting
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) had their 4th meeting of Partnership Steering Committee on 30 March in CAS Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology. The meeting was co-chaired by Prof. Fanny Cheung, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK and Prof. Zhang Jie, Vice-President of CAS. More than 40 CUHK and CAS members from a variety of joint projects (including members of joint laboratories of CUHK and CAS) participated in the meeting.
Fields of collaboration between CUHK and CAS include Synthetic Chemistry, Phytochemistry, Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, Molecular Research of Common Diseases, Traditional Chinese Medicines, Solar Energy, Precision Engineering, High Density Electronic Packaging Materials and Devices, Biomaterials, Multimedia Technology, and Bio-social Psychology. Participants reported recent progresses of the joint projects at the meeting. Whilist sharing the difficulties and challenges in respective research areas, members also reviewed the possibilities of expanding existing collaboration. Discussions were held on how to enhance the development of collaboration projects on innovation and entrepreneurship, along with the National 13th Five-Year Plan and One Belt One Road Initiative.
Vice President Zhang pointed out that the deep cooperation between CAS and CUHK should be maintained to encourage long-term mechanism for substantive development. Prof. Fanny Cheung stressed the importance of scientific and technological exchanges with CAS and commented that the collaboration will be further strengthened to enhance interdisciplinary research as well industrial cooperation and cohesion of research efforts.
Since the establishment of partnership in 1986, CUHK and CAS have been working closely to carry out a wide range of collaborative projects in academic exchange and research collaboration. CUHK has established two State Key Laboratories in collaboration with CAS and a number of joint laboratories in different research areas. The University also organizes the annual CAS Academicians Visit Programme to strengthen the sustainable partnership with CAS.

Working Group Meeting of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance in CUHK
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance, which was initiated by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and the University of Macau (UM), called a working group meeting on 14 March to discuss work plans under the Alliance. Representatives of the 26 member institutions joined the meeting and had discussion together with the participating government officials from the State Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province and the Education Bureau of the HKSAR.
Attendants discussed the annual work plan for the Alliance, paying attention to specific collaboration in a variety of areas, covering research collaboration, stuent interflow, acadmic exchange and professional links. A range of projects including exhibitions, exchange activities, sharing of research resources and application of joint laboratories. Members will further promote and coordinate student activities under the Alliance with themes in innovation and entrepreneurship, providing more placement opportunities. Discussion was also held in co-organizing academic and professional conferences, as well as the development of think tanks. The annual meeting of the Alliance was decided to take place in June to be organized by CUHK.
Founded in November last year, the Alliance aspires to gather elite universities in the region, to facilitate the nurture of leaders and to foster regional collaboration. Member institutions include nine universities from Hong Kong, ten universities from Guangdong Province and seven universities from Macau.
