The 11th meeting of Partnership Steering Committee between The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was held on 17 January at CUHK. The meeting was co-chaired by Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, and Prof. Xiao Hai Peng, Vice President of SYSU, with a total of more than 30 participants from the two universities.
Participating members of CUHK included Prof. Wong Suk-ying, Associate Vice-President; Prof. David Faure, Director of CUHK-SYSU Centre for Historical Anthropology and Wei Lun Research Professor of History; Prof. Cheung Sui Wai, Professor of Department of History; Prof. Zou Jun, Department Chairman of Mathematics; Prof. Xin Zhou Ping, Associate Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences; Prof. Zhong Hua, Department Vice-Chairman of Sociology; Prof. Jin Lei, Associate Professor of Department of Sociology; Prof. Shaw Pang Chui, Professor of School of Life Sciences, Prof. Shen Jianfa, Director of Research Centre for Urban and Regional Development of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS); Prof. Sung Yun Wing, Associate Director of Economic Research Centre of HKIAPS and Prof. Tao Qian, Professor of Department of Clinical Oncology.
Representatives of different collaboration groups reported respective project progress and reviewed the collaboration status. Joint projects ranged from oncology, historical anthropology, biotechnology, gastroenterology, mathematics, sociology, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, academic links and student affairs. Possibilities of expanding existing scope of collaboration under the Greater Bay Area Initiative were discussed, with an aim to explore more influential and pragmatic cooperation projects.
SYSU has been one of the key partners of CUHK since the establishment of partnership in 1981. Both universities have carried out a wide range of joint collaborative projects in student exchange, research collaboration and academic programmes. The CUHK-SYSU Partnership Steering Committee was set up by the two universities in 2008 to forge effective and sustainable relationship. In 2016, CUHK and SYSU joined hands as the initiating universities in Hong Kong and Guangdon Province to establish the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance in collaboration with the University of Macau. The Alliance aims to promote regional development by consolidating resources of elite universities and nurturing talents. The 28 members of the Alliance include 12 universities from the Guangdong Province, 9 universities from Hong Kong, as well as 7 institutions from Macau.
