Green Competition Camp under Cross-Strait Green University Consortium 2016

The Green Competition Camp under Cross-Strait Green University Consortium 2016 was organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in Hong Kong from 15 to 21 May 2016.  A total of 50 students participated in the event, among which include students from Nanjing University (NJU), National Central University (NCU), Beijing Normal University (BNU) and National Cheng Kung University (NCKU),

Students of diverse academic backgrounds and disciplines (including philosophy, business administration, finance, information management, physics, statistics, economics, communication, architecture, various areas of engineering, civil aviation and industrial design, alongside environment-related disciplines) form a total of 13 teams to take part in the competition.  They conducted in-depth studies on hot environemental topics of their choice (such as renewable energy, food waste disposal, low carbon emission and clean modes of transportation), invented or improved green products, and prepared comprehensive reports for the competition.  A list of awarded projects is set out below:

Champion:
Wherever Technology Service Centre by BNU

First Runner-up:
Cargo Pool: Innovative Mass Logistics System by NCKU

Second Runner-up:

Nano-purification System for Solar Energy Generation by NJU

Merit Prizes:

CU Cycle: Garbage Recycling Mobile App by CUHK

E'collect: Mobile App on Green Cutlery by NCU

Portable Water Purifier by NJU

Apart from the competition, the camp comprised seminars, field trips, visits, workshops and interactive sharing sessions, with focuses ranging from green campus and architecture, global climate change, environmental policies, as well as local history, language and culture. Participating students interacted with one another actively, discussed green topics reflecting on their attitudes towards green life, and collaborated to complete green tasks.

Prof. Fung Tung, Associate Vice-President of CUHK, gave remarks at the opening and closing ceremonies whlist serving as the chairperson of the adjudication panel.  He encouraged students to exchange green ideas and to be creative and observant.  Members of the adjudication panel include academic members from School of Architecture, Earth System Science Programme and Department of Geography and Resource Management.

The Cross-Strait Green University Consortium was established by CUHK, NCU and NJU in 2011, with the aim of consolidating resources and driving initiatives that incorporate green concepts into research and education.  The three institutions have been taking turns to organize camps and competitions since 2011 and 2013 respectively to encourage students to implement and spread ideas of sustainable development. This year, BNU and NCKU joined the camp as newly joined member universities. It is the first time the competition is combined with the camp. The event not only fostered friendship among students and enhanced their awareness of environmental protection, but also enabled them to have a better understanding of green concepts and sustainable development, encouraging them to apply green initiatives into daily lives.
