1. Message from the Chair

Welcome to Issue 16 of the Department of Statistics Newsletter, which highlights the Department’s events, activities and achievements from January 2021 onwards.

In view of the stabilising situation of COVID-19 in Hong Kong, the University resumed all face-to-face teaching activities on campus for the academic year 2021–2022. We are delighted to meet students on campus again after a prolonged period of online teaching. Nevertheless, we should relentlessly maintain good personal hygiene and stay vigilant against the virus.

I am pleased to introduce to you our new faculty member, Dr Dai Ben, whose research interests include deep learning, recommender systems and ranking as well as statistical machine learning. Please join me in welcoming Dr Dai.

On behalf of the department, I would like to express heartfelt gratitude to all colleagues, alumni and students for their continued support. The department pledges to continually strive to provide students with state-of-the-art statistical education while further conducting cutting-edge statistical research.
