MAJOR PAST EVENTS
School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Research Days 2012
|
With the concerted effort of the Organizing Committee of the SBS Postgraduate Research Days and the Graduate Education Office, the School of Biomedical Sciences Postgraduate Research Days 2012 was successfully held on 15 and 16 November 2012. This annual flagship event aimed to serve as a platform for our postgraduate students to interact with and learn from their peers and supervisors.

Joint Symposium on Clinical Genetics & Prenatal Diagnosis
|
Officiated by Prof. Chan Wai-Yee, Director of the School of Biomedical Sciences and Prof. Ng Pak-Cheung, Professor, Department of Paediatrics, a joint symposium on Clinical Genetics and Prenatal Diagnosis was successfully held on 15 September 2012 at Kai Chong Tong, Postgraduate Education Centre, Prince of Wales Hospital. The symposium was co-organized by School of Biomedical Sciences, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Department of Paediatrics and was well attended by around 120 participants.

2nd CUHK International Symposium on Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine
|
The 2nd CUHK International Symposium on Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine was successfully held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute (CUHK SZRI) and The Prince of Wales Hospital on 19-20 November 2012. The symposium was jointly organized by the Stem Cell and Regeneration Center, CUHK; the Stem Cell and Regeneration Program of the School of Biomedical Sciences, CUHK; the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, CUHK; The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre, CUHK; the Key Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine (Jinan University-CUHK), Ministry of Education, PR China; CUHK SZRI; and the School of Medicine, Shenzhen University.

Visit of UGC Chairman and Secretary-General
|
Mr. Edward Cheng, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Universities Grants Committee (UGC), and Dr. Richard Armour, Secretary-General of UGC, visited the University on 6 November 2012 to learn the latest development of CUHK in terms of the new hardware facilities for the 334 curriculum transition.

Sharing Seminar on "From Innovation to the Market: Commercialization Opportunities and Strategies"
|
Subsequent to joining the BIO2012 International Convention and Biotechnology Study Mission in Boston earlier in June 2012, Prof. David C.C. Wan, Associate Professor of our School, together with three other biotechnologists of the University who participated in the said event, were invited by the Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) to take part in the "Professional Enhancement Fund Sharing Seminar - From Innovation to Market: Commercialization Opportunities and Strategies" held on 11 October 2012. During the seminar, our Prof. Wan and other speakers shared with the participants the new insights on biotech research and development strategies obtained from the trip as well as their personal experiences.

Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions
|
The Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK O-Day) was held successfully on 27 October 2012. It was the first time for the Faculty of Medicine to organize the exhibitions and admissions talks at the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building (LIBSB), since the Choh-Ming Li Basic Medical Sciences Building had been under renovation.

SBS Christmas Party 2012
|
The SBS Christmas Party 2012 was successfully held on 14 December 2012 at the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building. It was the very first time we organized our Christmas Party at the new building after our move-in in February 2012. About 300 teaching and non-teaching staff members, postgraduate students and invited guests participated in the Party.

SBS Annual Report 2011-2012
|
We are most pleased to announce that our SBS Annual Report 2011-2012 (bilingual version) has recently been published. This Report features our School's achievements in different domains (including research, education, academic and community links, etc.) for the period between 1 July 2011 and 30 June 2012. Through this bilingual publication, we hope our stakeholders within and outside the CUHK and the public can understand our School from a wider perspective and become more acquainted with us.

Animal Handling Course for SBS RPg Students
|
Being part of the curriculum of the M.Phil.-Ph.D. Programme in Biomedical Sciences, our Graduate Education Team and the Core Laboratories Team coordinated with the Laboratory Animal Services Centre (LASEC) of the Faculty of Medicine to arrange a special lecture on animal handling skills on 26 October 2012. During the lecture, Dr. Dewi K. Rowlands, Scientific Officer of LASEC, shared with our postgraduate students his knowledge on animal ethics and appropriate animal handling skills, and introduced to them the available facilities in LASEC.

Visit from Japanese International School (JIS)
|
A group of P5 students and their teachers from Japanese International School, amounted to 25 persons, visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 29 November 2012.

|
A group of 30 students from the Independent Schools Foundation Academy visited the School of Biomedical Sciences on 11 December 2012.

AWARDS AND HONOURS
The RGC Collaborative Research Fund 2012/13 obtained by School member
|
Prof. Huang Yu, Professor of our School, successfully secured a total of $7.7 million from the Research Grants Council (RGC) Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) 2012/13 in his capacity of Principal Coordinator for a project titled "Physical Exercise Promotes Vascular Health: Impact of Mechano-Transduction and Novel Endothelium-derived Regulators".

The NSFC/RGC Joint Research Scheme 2012/13
|
Prof. Xia Yin, Assistant Professor and Prof. Zhao Hui, Research Assistant Professor of our School successfully secured grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China / Research Grants Council (NSFC/RGC) Joint Research Scheme 2012/13, which grossed a total of HK$2.05 million (from the RGC) and RMB¥1.60 million (from the NSFC).

Miss. Li Qian, Year 4 Ph.D. student in the "Neuro-degeneration, -development and Repair" (NDDR) theme of SBS, was awarded the Hong Kong Association of University Women Postgraduate Scholarships 2011-2012 for her outstanding achievements in research.

At the invitation of Prof. XU Xian-ming, President of Shandong University and Prof. Chen Zijiang, Vice Dean, School of Medicine, Shandong University and Director of the National Research Center for Assisted Reproductive Technology and Reproductive Genetics, Prof. Chan Wai-yee, Director, School of Biomedical Sciences of CUHK led a delegation comprising Prof. Kung Hsiangfu and Prof. Gang Lu to visit the National Center and Shandong University between 18 and 22 September 2012.

The Third Military Medical University and CUHK School of Biomedical Science Joint Symposium on Cancer & the 5th International Forum on Cancer Research and Drug Discovery was held successfully on 2 November 2012 at the Southwest Hospital, Third Military Medical University, Chongqing, China.

Signing Ceremony for MOU on ASIA-International Biomedical Science Consortium
|
Further to the previous visits in February and May 2012, a group of delegates from Khon Kaen University, Thailand paid a follow-up visit to the School of Biomedical Sciences on 13 September 2012. Prof. Chan Wai-Yee, School Director and Prof. C.H. Cho, Associate Director (Research) met with the delegates to have further discussion on actualizing the planned academic exchange and research collaboration between the two parties.

The 3rd Annual Conference on Chinese Stem Cell Research and the 5th Guangzhou International Conference on Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine

Prof. Chan Wai-Yee, Director of School of Biomedical Sciences and Prof. Wan Chao, member of our Stem Cell and Regeneration Program attended the Third Annual Conference on Chinese Stem Cell Research and the Fifth Guangzhou International Conference on Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine held at Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center between 16 and 18 December 2012.

Visit of the President of Chinese Academy of Sciences

A delegation led by Prof. Bai Chunli, President of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), visited The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 23 November 2012 to learn the latest development of the various joint establishments between the two parties and to renew the mutual collaborative agreements.

Following the previous visits to the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (KIZ, CAS) in June and August 2012, our School was invited to join the 1st Symposium on Non-Human Primate Model held between 30 November 2012 and 2 December 2012 in Yunnan, China.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Symposium on "Biomedical Research across the Continents – Insights and Innovation"
|
The University of Pittsburgh, U.S.A., Tsinghua University, The University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will jointly organize a symposium on "Biomedical Research across the Continents – Insights and Innovation" in the HKUST between 7 and 8 March 2013. The symposium will cover five board themes, namely, i) Neuroscience; ii) Immunology/Infectious Diseases; iii) Imaging and Modeling; iv) Normal & Cancer Cell Biology; and v) Developmental and Stem Cell Biology. Eight speakers have been nominated from each participating institution to deliver talks in the above areas in the two-day symposium.
