Webinar on 10 July 2020_Perceptual Assessment of Cleft Palate Speech/Velopharyngeal Dysfunction: An International Perspective & A Tool for Cantonese-Speaking Children

About the webinar:

Perceptual assessment of cleft speech is at the core of speech methodology in the field of Cleft Lip and Palate. It is the gold standard in providing outcome data for clinical assessment and research to support evidence-based practice in the field. Although there is yet no single international standardized approach, there is a range of specified and internationally agreed upon articulation and non-articulation parameters in cleft palate speech and velopharyngeal dysfunction. Accurate and valid assessment of speech in individuals with a cleft condition also requires a clinical tool that adheres not only to international guidelines but also to the phonetics and the phonology of the spoken language being assessed. The Cantonese-Cleft Speech Assessment Tool (C-CSAT: Yiu, Chan, Choi & Pereira) was published and launched in July 2019.

The aim of this webinar is to equip graduating SLT students with knowledge of the tool and how to use the tool correctly, given the complexity of cleft palate/VPI speech and the range of parameters included in a cleft speech assessment protocol. It is assumed that students will have some background and basic knowledge of cleft lip and palate/velopharyngeal insufficiency and associated speech outcomes. On completion of the webinar, each participant will be sent the complete C-CSAT (Yiu et al., 2019) including the photo book and the charting and rating forms.
