Abstract: Since generative AI’s public release, its rapid adoption across advertising has sparked a surge in scholarly research. While AI enables hyper-personalized content creation at scale, AI-powered search, and agentic shopping, it raises critical questions and concerns. Consumers are increasingly engaging with AI-generated media experiences, blurring the line between the real and the artificial. AI also transforms how consumers search for and process product information, disrupting SEO/SEM strategies. These developments challenge foundational advertising concepts and advertising effect theory. Furthermore, ethical considerations around content ownership, misinformation, and societal impact further underscore the urgent need for thoughtful, responsible frameworks. This seminar examines various topics related to the rise of generative AI in advertising and its implications for advertising practice and scholarship. Through interactive discussion, the speaker will challenge traditional advertising concepts, address key societal risks, and outline a future research agenda to build new theoretical frontiers in the AI era.
