“Love,” “responsibility,” “filial piety,” “it’s for your own good”… Family is where we grow up, yet when Chinese family values intersect with personal needs, a complex distance forms between us and our families.
In this dialogue, Vivian Tam, author of Home Locks: The Behemoth of Chinese Families (家鎖：華人家庭這個巨獸), and Dr. Renee Chiu, Lecturer in the Department of Social Work, extend the conversation from personal experience to a cultural perspective, unpacking the trauma and loneliness within family relationships.
Through this exchange, we hope to sense those hard-to-express yet deeply interconnected emotions in family ties, and to reflect on how we might respond to our own and others’ stories of growth with greater understanding and care—navigating the space between “love” and “responsibility,” “intimacy” and “distance.”

《家鎖：華人家庭這個巨獸》作者譚蕙芸及社會工作學系講師趙芊嵐博士展開對談，從個人經歷延伸至文化視角，解構家庭關係中的創傷與孤獨。希望透過這場對話，讓我們體會家庭關係中那些難以言喻、卻又彼此牽連的情感，並思考如何在『愛』與『責任』、『親密』與『距離』之間，以更多的理解與關懷去回應自己與他人的成長故事。
