Abstract:
This talk explores Taiwan New Cinema through a curatorial lens, drawing on personal memory, archival research, and recent interviews with key figures such as Chen Kun-hou and Huang Yu-shan. While the movement is often framed around internationally renowned auteurs like Edward Yang and Hou Hsiao-Hsien, this presentation seeks to expand its narrative by foregrounding the contributions of lesser-known collaborators - editors, sound designers, screenwriters, and multitaskers - whose work shaped the movement’s emotional and aesthetic language. In doing so, we will spotlight the work of these unsung visionaries whose work celebrated the everyday, centred women’s voices and recognised the importance of cultural nuances - adding to the richness of Taiwanese New Cinema.
