Abstract:
This presentation revisits the debate on whether Confucian ethics is a care ethic. Since Chenyang Li first proposed the Confucian care thesis in 1994 that Confucianism is a care ethic, it has been widely influential among feminists in traditionally Confucian societies. In this presentation, I offer a detailed analysis of care ethics alongside a careful examination of the Confucian care thesis to support a conclusion that Confucian ethics is not a care ethic and that Confucian feminism does not have to take the form of a care ethic.
