In the new academic year, the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) is pleased to welcome 5 visiting scholars:

Prof. Stacey Pierson from SOAS University of London, UK, supported jointly by ICS and the Department of Fine Arts; Prof. Yao Jianhua from Fudan University and Prof. Yang Fan from University of Maryland, Baltimore County, both supported by Visiting Scholar Scheme in Modern China Studies; Dr. Annie Ren from The Australian National University and Dr. Zhou Chenshu from University of Pennsylvania, both supported by Asia-Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies’ Young Scholars Visiting Scheme.

News: Lingnan Culture Studies Research Paper Competition 2024 Award Winners
The award winners of the Lingnan Culture Studies Research Paper Competition 2024, which was organized by the Research Programme for Lingnan Culture, Institute of Chinese Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, have been officially announced. The Competition aims to promote international academic research on Lingnan culture, as well as to encourage local and overseas doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows who are aspiring to conduct in-depth research in the field. The competition received up to 50 research papers, which were subject to assessment by the selection committee.

Event Report: The Lantern Festival Concert – Music for CM Li and You
The Lantern Festival Concert – Music for CM Li and You was held on 6 February 2025. This year, Yat Po Singers, the first professional a cappella choral theatre company in Hong Kong, was invited to perform. The concert attracted over 60 attendees, including CUHK members and guests from outside the University, to celebrate the Lantern Festival in the ICS courtyard.

Event Report: “Tolo Harbour Autumn Chanting” Classical Poetry Recitation Gathering 2024
“Tolo Harbour Autumn Chanting” Classical Poetry Recitation Gathering 2024 was successfully held on 13 December 2024 at the Institute of Chinese Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, by the shore of Tolo Harbour. The gathering was previously organized in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. This year’s event marked a new milestone with the collaborative efforts of the Research Programme for Lingnan Culture, the Research Centre for Classical Chinese Poetics, the Chinese University of Hong Kong Library, and the RGC Collaborative Research Fund Project “Lingnan Culture and the World” (2023 – 2026), as well as the generous support of the GS Charity Foundation.

Event Highlight: The Eleventh Inter-Regional Forum on Dialectal Grammar
The Inter-Regional Forum on Dialectal Grammar (IRF) was initiated by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in 2015 and extended its partnership with Fudan University in 2017. Organized rotationally by these three institutions, IRF serves as a platform intended to foster research on dialectal grammar under a comparative approach, focusing on southeastern Chinese dialects like Yue and Wu dialects, to promote inter-regional studies, and to strengthen intellectual exchange and dialogue among researchers from different regions.

The eleventh IRF, organized by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at SYSU and co-organized by the T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre of the Institute of Chinese Studies at CUHK, will be held on 21–22 June 2025 at SYSU. For the details of the Forum, please visit:
