AI4Education @ CUHK and Beyond

Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Generative AI (GenAI), has emerged as a profoundly disruptive technology, simultaneously transforming various facets of our lives. In the realm of education, the impact of AI is particularly noteworthy, ushering in a new era of possibilities under the umbrella of AI4Education.

Unmanned Systems and AI Empowered High Performance Urban Environment Digitization and Management

Rapid urbanization has placed unprecedented demands on cities to manage infrastructure efficiently while ensuring sustainability and safety. Traditional methods for urban inspections—reliant on manual labour, fixed sensors, or manual drone deployments—often struggle to address the dynamic challenges of modern cities, from aging infrastructure to environmental hazards. These approaches are not only time-consuming but also limited in scalability, leaving gaps in real-time monitoring and decision-making.

Foundational AI Model, VisionFM, Set to Transform Ophthalmic Care Worldwide

Vision impairment and the major eye diseases that lead to it, such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma, are pressing global health issues. By 2050, it is estimated that approximately 474 million people may experience moderate to severe vision impairment, with a particularly acute shortage of specialized ophthalmologists in low-income countries.

Areas of Excellence - AI-Powered Surgical Robots

Surgical robots are employed to carry out various surgical procedures with surgeons’ full manual control, causing concerns for operational safety and quality due to the possibility of human error. This project, led by Professor Liu Yunhui, introduces novel AI and automation functions to surgical robots to enhance operational safety and accuracy.
