Robot-assisted Endoluminal En Bloc Resection of Bladder Tumours (ERBT)

Bladder cancer remains one of the most common cancers globally, with more than 600,000 new cases diagnosed annually. With limitations of the existing Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumour (TURBT) treatment,  recurrence rate of bladder cancers remains high (50%). Clinicians advocate for en bloc resection of early-stage bladder tumours, as this technique allows for the complete removal of the growth in one piece.
A novel “nanoworm” gene carrier for safer and more effective gene therapy

Intracellular gene delivery mediated by nanoparticles forms the foundation of many important nanomedicines, such as the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, which have prevented deaths globally. However, a critical and longstanding challenge in gene delivery has been how to effectively deliver therapeutic genes into the cytosol and ensure that they function properly.

Medical and Engineering Team Up for Agile Robotic Arms for Precise Tumor Removal

Professor Ka-wai Kwok from the Faculty of Engineering and Professor Jason Chan from the Faculty of Medicine have developed a tiny and fully flexible dual-arm robot, specifically designed for endoluminal endoscopic surgery. Seamlessly compatible with existing endoscopes, the system enhances surgical dexterity and precision while lowering the training barrier. In its first-in-human clinical trial, it successfully treated bladder cancer, offering new hope for early cancer treatment.
