From Development to Deployment of Construction Robots in Hong Kong
In recent years, the challenge of aging construction workers in Hong Kong is becoming increasingly severe and there has been many unfortunate accidents related to work at heights and site safety... As such, the development of new technological solutions to improve construction safety, quality and efficiency is recognised and welcomed by the society’s building stakeholders, from government, building owners to developers, contractors and workers.
Dizi-inspired optical gas sensor with high sensitivity and wide bandwidth

The dizi, a Chinese bamboo flute, is a major musical instrument widely used in many genres of Chinese folk music and Chinese opera. Inspired by the bamboo flute, Professor Ren Wei's team in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering proposed a new concept of cavity-enhanced photoacoustic dual-comb spectroscopy for high sensitivity, wide bandwidth, high resolution and fast spectroscopic measurement. The breakthrough was recently published in the prestigious journal Light: Science & Applications, and selected as the cover article (Volume 3, Issue 4).
Revolutionizing Optical Computing: Harnessing Light for Solving AI's Energy and Computation Bottleneck

As artificial intelligence (AI) transforms sectors from healthcare to industry, its substantial computation demand and energy consumption raise urgent sustainability concerns. Traditional AI relies on deep neural networks that require energy-intensive computations to process vast amounts of data. This approach demands significant computational power and substantial energy usage, posing environmental and economic challenges.

Automated cable-driven robotic system embarking on a journey of innovation in the construction industry

Painting, building walls and cleaning building exteriors used to be done manually, CUHK research team has developed an automated cable-driven robotic system that can build walls of specific curvatures and geometric shapes as required by architects. The robot has been put into operation previously to rebuild the recycling garden on campus. Professor Darwin Lau Tat-ming, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering and the developer of the robotic system is introducing the innovation in this interview.
