The Road Less Travelled
Four SHHO off-road runners joined the 16 km 'Chill with the Wild' race as a team in the Totem Run 2014 held on 4 October to test their physical endurance while stimulating their minds with sights and sounds along the way. The race started from Shing Mun Reservoir and ended at Tai Mo Shan, the highest mountain in Hong Kong. In addition to appreciating the spectacular scenery on the green mountains, they ran to raise money for Christian Zheng Sheng College's campus renovation. The SHHO team was ranked the 11th among the 84 teams in the race.

The Rhythm of Breathing
'The most important know-how to improve swimming is to relax. When you slow down your breathing and pay attention to posture, you will save more energy and swim farther with weakened water resistance,' explained Mr. Wu who is one of the coaches of CUHK Swimming Team and a member of S.H. Ho College coordinating the College's sports activities and forming sports teams. In his teenage years, he represented Hong Kong to participate in the Barcelona Olympic Games and the Beijing Asian Games. Despite his splendid swimming records, Mr. Wu is known for his modesty, gentle tenderness and well-rounded acumen.

The Tipping Point of Intercultural Dialogue

This is the age of information explosion. With the popularization of electronic gadgets, loads of information ranging from international affairs, cultural events to promotional news could be accessed at our fingertips. Enhanced connectivity, however, may not inspire cross-cultural intellectual exchange but personal touch with different nationalities does. Six students chosen by S.H. Ho College attended the Pan-Asian Student Forum in Seoul, during which they experienced the tipping point of intercultural dialogue.

A Research Internship Exposure in Vienna
Internships are golden opportunities for students to explore the professional world by applying academic theory and enriching themselves with career-related experiences. Tan Yuqi, a graduate of S.H. Ho College and the valedictorian in 2014, participated in a research internship programme in Europe which brought her to a culturally diverse research environment, built her professional network and paved the way for her postgraduate scientific pursuit in unveiling the molecular mechanism behind human diseases.  Having received more than 1,200 internship applications worldwide, the Vienna Biocenter Summer School chose 21 interns from 15 countries. Yuqi is one of them.

On 20 November 2014, the second cohort of S.H. Ho College graduates was dressed in gowns representing their respective faculties and proceeded to the stage one after another to receive their diplomas and college souvenirs from Master Samuel Sun and Dr. Tzu-leung Ho. When Prof. KB Wong, Dean of Students of the College, announced a name, the graduate's photo and name would be displayed on the screen. Every minute detail reflected the College's wholeheartedness on cherishing each graduate's uniqueness and presence.

The Heart of Doctoring
'S.H. Ho College is not just a place for us to stay, it's rather a place of vitality for us to learn and grow,' said Zoe Wong, the second president of the Medical Society of the College. On 14 November 2014, Zoe reported to the attendees of the Medical Society Annual Dinner the contributions of the society on promoting healthy lifestyle, fostering intellectual exchange among medical students and nurturing peer support in the big family. One year ago, the society was officially launched and Dr. Tzu-leung Ho passed the skeleton, a symbol of dedication to caring patients, to the first president Elbert Lee. In the same location, Elbert Lee passed the same skeleton to Zoe Wong. It symbolises the heart of doctoring is being ignited within the close-knit community.

When the Bright Minds Take Flight
Endeavour to attract and nurture the bright minds from the local and international community, S.H. Ho College has been offering a wide range of scholarships and awards in recognition of students' academic excellence and outstanding performance in areas such as creativity, community services, sports and leadership activities, moral character and contributions to the College.  At the High Table Dinner-cum-Scholarship Presentation Ceremony on 12 November, Prof. Samuel Sun, Dr. Tzu-leung Ho and Mrs. Stella Ho presented 99 scholarship awards to the College's distinguished students.

Originated from France in the nineteenth century, Café Philo brings intellects together in a friendly forum where they could exchange views ranging from philosophy, life and death, aesthetics to social issues while drinking coffee or wine in a relaxed manner. Food for thought is nourished through the interaction between speakers and participants. To promote intellectually stimulating discussions among the SHHO community, the first Café Philo discussion titled 'What does Grassroots Community matter to me?' was held in the Like Reading Room on 7 October. Mr. Wayne Chau and Mr. Stanley Ho had in-depth discussion with the SHHO participants on social justice.

An Ode to Bravery
There are many ways to be brave. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for someone. Sometimes it involves self-sacrifice for the sake of something greater. Chow Tin Nok, President of Lee Quo Wei Hall Resident Council, gained applauses from the SHHO community for his bravery and vigilance. Alerted by the College of the suspicious pinhole cameras installed in the hostel's female bathroom, Ah Nok became vigilant and courageously caught the suspect together with a few students on 7 October.

Delegates Received at S.H. Ho College
S.H. Ho College received delegates from near and far over the autumn. They were introduced the unique collegiate system of CUHK and how SHHO students find a home away from home adopting a fully residential and communal dining basis. Touring around the college campus and the facilities conducive to student development, they gained a personal touch of the vibrant campus life at the College.
