Latitude 66 Degrees North
On 10 May, 17 students of S.H. Ho College formed the first team of undergraduates in Hong Kong to explore the Arctic under the guidance of College staff Dr. KC Chung and Mr. Ivan Leung. Upon arrival at Copenhagen in Denmark, they eventually arrived in Greenland to embark on the exploration vessel Rembrandt Van Rijn for their 12-day icy journey at latitude 66 degrees north. Greenland, where 80% of the land is covered by an ice-cap 4km thick in places, is the world's largest island on which the population is only about 57,000. Formerly a province of Denmark, it gained the status of an autonomous Danish dependent territory with partial self-government in 2008 referendum. Many local Eskimo people (Inuit) mainly survive by hunting and fishing, and are struggling as fish stocks become depleted by climate change. Between 13 and 19 August, the European Space Agency discovered that Greenland's Jakobshavn Glacier lost its ice chunk with total area of 12.4km2 (equivalent to the size of Lamma Island), reflecting how global warming is accelerating glacier retreat in the Arctic.

Thus Spake the Entrepreneurs

Russell Street in Causeway Bay was once renowned for its most expensive rental cost on earth. Three young entrepreneurs, however, decided to rent an upstairs shop on this street to found their organic food shop HeyHome. They are Kelvin Chan (SHHO alumnus graduated in 2013/14, Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering), Raymond Choy and Henri Chan. From selecting food suppliers, determining the shop address, product packaging to brand promotion, the entrepreneurs managed each minute detail themselves. Obviously, their entrepreneurial courage is not a foolhardy one. They directly purchase organic food from Britain and the United States, and 90% of their products cannot be found in other local shops. Three months after the launch of HeyHome, the shop was getting more well-received by health conscious customers.

Youthful Footprints in Overseas Marathons
Overseas experiences help students build global outlook. Joining overseas marathon competitions even stretches their limits and tests their perseverance, not to mention the added bonus of   traversing the exotic terrains and experiencing different cultures. To support runners on their self-challenge path, S.H. Ho College initiated its Overseas Running Race Subsidy Scheme from which qualified SHHO runners would receive subsidy for their designated trip expenses. This year, a few SHHO runners left their footprints in their first overseas marathons including the Vienna City Marathon, Gold Coast Airport Marathon and TVBS North Coast Charity Run.

Rhythm of Running
S.H. Ho College teamed up with Zheng Sheng College to participate in 42km full-marathon race in the Athens Marathon to be held on 8 November. In a bid to improve the running team's physique and cultivate their team spirit, staff and students from the two colleges have been regularly practising at Sir Philip Haddon-Cave Sports Field, CUHK and Zheng Sheng College in Mui Wo in alternate months since January 2015. The team attended the Athens Marathon Training Camp held at S.H. Ho College in August, a scorching month showered with occasional heavy rain. Mr. Sunny Chau, the coach of SHHO Runner Force, and Mr. Tsui Chi Kin, a full-marathon runner in Hong Kong's National Team, were invited to share the knowhow of running. Subsequently, the team ran in Sir Philip Haddon-Cave Sports Field despite the torrential rain on 14 August. When they were doing warm-up, a sharp bolt of lightning snaked across the sky, followed by heavy thundering. Their determination to persist, however, became stronger …

Visitations from Near and Far
Visitation from SKH Macau Social Service Coordination Office
From construction of student hostels to having its third batch of graduates, S.H. Ho College has entered its ninth year after assiduous cultivation all along. Adopting a fully residential and communal dining basis, the College has welcomed more than 150 visitors from near and far over this summer. They came to understand CUHK's unique collegiate system and how the College became 600 students' home away from home. The visitors were fascinated by their firsthand exposure to the vibrant college life after site-visiting the campus environment and facilities conducive to student development.
