Rising star: from an engineer to a fashion designer |
Is there anything similar between engineering and fashion
design? Yes, maybe. They both develop or create something from
scratch. Xu Jianjun, a student of Higher Diploma in Fashion Design and
Business who won the CUSCS Fashion Show 2015, may be able to tell you precisely
the similarities between these two professions. Once an engineer, Jianjun
decided to switch tracks and receive formal design training, with an aim to set
up his own brand of leather products.

Students showcase their creativity at the "Design Point" Graduation Exhibition |
At the "Design Point" Graduation Exhibition held from 29 May to 31 May at Tsimshatsui East Learning Centre, 26 students of Higher Diploma in Commercial Design showcased their talent and competed for the Best Collection Award and the Best Display Award. Mak Ka-leong snatched the championship of both awards. His collection, named "Open Your Eye", promotes a series of products that keep employees away from naps during office hours.

Flinders Accounting Student awarded "The Outstanding Student" |
Lily Wan, a student of Bachelor of Accounting and an alumna of Higher Diploma in Business Studies, was awarded "The Outstanding Student" from CPA Australia. Lily graduated from the CUSCS Higher Diploma Programme and went on to study for a Bachelor Degree in Accounting offered by Flinders University and CUSCS. Lily actively participated in the mentorship programme, career talks and interview workshops offered by the School to equip herself with better interpersonal skills and communication skills. She is thrilled to be awarded as one of the ten awardees of "The Outstanding Student" in Hong Kong and plans to develop her career in auditing.

Best Innovation Award 2015 |
Two teams comprising eight Higher Diploma students won the
Bronze Award and Towngas Award in the Best Innovation Award 2015 organised by
the School of Professional Education and Executive Development of Hong Kong
Polytechnic University.

HKSAR Self-Financing Post-Secondary Scholarship |
160 Higher Diploma students received scholarships from the Hong Kong SAR Government under the "Self-Financing Post-Secondary Scholarship Scheme". Mr. Eddie Ng, Secretary for Education, officiated at the Presentation Ceremony held on 15 April. Various collections designed by students of Higher Diploma in Fashion Design and Business were on display at the event.

Students excel at Korean Storytelling and Poem Recital Contest |
The Korean Storytelling and Poem Recital Contest (10th Korean Speech Contest) came to a successful end at the CUSCS Central Learning Centre on 19 June 2015. The contest was divided into two categories, namely Storytelling and Poem Recital. Wong Chung-sze, a student of Higher Diploma Programme in Applied Korean Language, was named the winner of the Storytelling Category while Lai Tsz-wai, a student of part-time course "Advanced Korean", snatched the championship of the Poem Recital Category.

Welcome Home! |
The ever first CUSCS Alumni Homecoming was successfully concluded on 19 September. Some 200 alumni gathered at the EOC Learning Centre to meet and chat with teachers and friends, and to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. A tea reception and a wide range of activities including a lantern workshop, Japanese and Korean costume fitting and a lantern quiz were organised to welcome alumni home.

Open House to help chart your study path |
Various open days for Continuing Education Programmes under different themes were held from May to August. Open days with the themes on international culture and healthy lifestyle were held in May to provide the public with an opportunity to experience foreign culture and to live a healthy life with the help of art and a balanced diet. Other talks on career development were held in June while one on art and music was held at the end of August.

Warm welcome for new CUSCS students |
The Inauguration Ceremony and Orientation for Higher Diploma Programmes was held at CUHK on 9 September. In her welcoming address, Dr. Ella Chan, Director of the School, encouraged new students to equip themselves through the wide range of exchange and service programmes offered by the School. Professor Michael Hui, Pro-Chancellor of CUHK, who officiated at the Ceremony, recommended students to enhance their language ability, international perspective and experience as well as analytical and problem-solving skills. In the orientation session that followed, Mr. Daniel Chong, Chief Executive Officer of YATA Limited, shared that the key to live a successful life begins with self-respect.

The Graduation Ceremony of the Top-up Undergraduate Degree Programmes offered by CUSCS and Griffith University, Australia was held on 13 September at CUHK. Dr. Ella Chan, Director of the School, Mr. Henry Smerdon AM, Chancellor of Griffith University, as well as Professor Ian O'Connor, Vice Chancellor and President of Griffith University, officiated at the ceremony. Dr. Ella Chan asked graduates to keep learning and treasure their family apart from everyday work.

Bachelor of Digital Media (Graphic Design) Programme accredited QF Level 5 |
The Bachelor of Digital Media (Graphic Design) Programme, jointly offered by CUSCS and Griffith University, Australia, has been accredited by The Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HDCAAVQ) at Qualification Framework (QF) Level 5, which is equivalent to the standing of bachelor's degrees offered by local universities in Hong Kong.

CUSCS Golden Jubilee Conference: Lifelong Education and Career Development was successfully held at CUHK, on 7 July 2015. More than 100 educators and professionals exchanged views and experiences at the Conference and the Paper Presentation Sessions that followed.

Educators and professionals share tips on parenting at Parents' Talk 2015 |
The CUSCS parents' talks held in June and July were successfully concluded. The talk held on 13 June was delivered by Dr. Peter Cheung and Ms. Eugina Lau. They shared that what parents should provide children with is neither money nor material processions, but a harmonious family relationship and unconditional love.

Secondary students present innovative ideas at Inter-School Mobile App Design Competition |
"The Inter-School Mobile App Design Competition" jointly organised by CUSCS, The Hong Kong Computer Society and Hong Kong Joint School Electronics and Computer Society was successfully concluded. The competition was divided into two categories, namely App Programming and App Proposal. The Championship of the App Programming Category went to Ma On Shan Tsung Tsin Secondary School while the Championship of the App Proposal Category went to True Light Girls' College (senior group) and Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School (junior group).

Seventeen HD students become "Financial Ambassadors" |
Seventeen Higher Diploma students joined the "Youth Financial Education Programme" organised by The Hong Kong Association of Banks and St. James' Settlement. They will receive a series of training on financial literacy such as savings, investment, insurance and loans, and then become members of a team of 30 "Financial Ambassadors" to conduct financial management related activities for 1,500 secondary school students. The Delegation Ceremony was held on 26 June 2015. Mr. Eddie Ng, Secretary for Education, and Mr. George Leung, Acting Chairperson of Hong Kong Association of Banks, officiated at the Ceremony.

HD students gain valuable insights through CUSCS Industrial Mentorship Programme |
The 1st
CUSCS Industrial Mentorship Programme concluded in joy and laughter at the
closing ceremony held on 6 May. Mentors and mentees gathered at CUSCS
Central Learning Centre to celebrate the fruitful experience. Sixty-three
mentees attended the ceremony and shared what they had learnt from their
mentors. They also thanked mentors for offering support and
guidance.

"SWAP" Programme successfully concluded for the third year |
Twenty Higher Diploma students completed 120 hours of
voluntary service and gained hands-on service experience under the
3rd "Serve with a Purpose" Programme (SWAP) organised by CUSCS, St.
James' Settlement and VISA Hong Kong.
