| JCSPHPC Graduates Celebrate! |
This year's graduation ceremony took place on 29 November in Shaw Auditorium in the School of Public Health Building. A total of 275 students graduated from JCSPHPC, with over half able to attend in person to receive their degree certificates. Their family members, friends and guests plus JCSPHPC teaching staff attended the joyous event. Dr. Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health, was our Guest of Honor for this ceremony.

| Strengthening Mainland-HK Ties to Enhance Disaster Epidemiology Research |
On October 20th, The Collaborating Centre for Oxford
University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) was
invited to attend the first annual academic conference of the Chinese Society of
Disaster Medicine, which has significant and far-reaching impact on the
establishment and development of the field of disaster medicine in the mainland.
The conference was attended by more than 100 renown Chinese disaster medicine
experts and academics, among which Prof. Emily Chan, CCOUC Director, and Prof.
Kevin Hung, CCOUC Research Manager, delivered two presentations on "The
Relationship between Disaster Preparedness in Less-developed Region and Disaster
Experience", as well as "The Emergency Plan for the Nuclear Incident in Hong
Kong" respectively.

| CUHK Develops an Automatic Retinal Image Analysis System to Help Diabetes Patients and Elderly Prevent Stroke |
|
Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in Hong Kong. Diabetic retinopathies (DR) and hypertensive retinopathies are associated with stroke. Retinal vessels are the only visible vessels and accessible by retinal imaging technique. They have the same embryo origin, histological structure and pathological change caused by diabetes and hypertension with cerebral vessels, which provide us a convenient way to assess cerebral vessels condition. Prof. Benny Zee and his research team from the Division of Biostatistics, The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have developed an automatic retinal image analysis system to assess cerebral vessel condition to evaluate the risk of stroke.

| CCOUC Presents Temperature Impact Research at Oxford |
The director of the Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response, Prof. Emily Chan, was invited to give a seminar in the Oxford University Clinical Academic Graduate School (OUCAGS) on 13 November 2012. The seminar is part of the Oxford Academic Medical Forum which targets clinicians-in-training to be involved at all levels of medical research. Prof. Chan made a presentation on "Evidence-based medical humanitarian action: What have we learnt regarding temperature impact on Asian urban health outcomes?", and shared with the participating junior researchers pieces of scientific evidence that advance global understanding of the health impact of climate change in Asian metropolitan.

| A JCSPHPC Project on Tuberculosis Screening and Control among Smokers in Yunnan Province Receives WPRO Grant |
|
Led by Prof. Xiaolin Wei from the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care (JCSPHPC), a proposal entitled "Operational research on intensified case finding for active tuberculosis among smokers with high risk factors in a poor and ethically diverse province in China" was awarded financial grant by the Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) of World Health Organization (WHO) under open international competition.

The World Health Organization (WHO) drafted a Health Emergency Risk Management Framework (HERMF) that illustrates guiding principles of emergency risk management for its member states. The director of the Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC), Prof. Emily Chan, was invited to participate in the "Consultation on the Health Emergency Risk Management Framework and Improving Public Health Preparedness" (HERMF) organized by WHO in Geneva.

The Hong Kong-Shenzhen Forum for Occupational Health 2012 was successfully held during 2-3, November in the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This forum was jointly organized by the Division of Occupational and Environmental Health, JCSPHPC, CUHK and Shenzhen Prevention and Treatment Center for Occupational Diseases.
